Birch Foundation is a local Gold Coast charity helping people in the community through our op shop, small coffee shop, and support programs. We assist individuals experiencing hardship, including those affected by domestic violence, seniors, and people facing financial challenges — creating a safe, welcoming space for connection and care.
About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate and community-minded Casual Retail Coordinator whose main role will be managing and operating the café (drinks only, no food preparation) and op shop.
You'll oversee daily operations, recruit and train volunteers, maintain Work Health and Safety standards, manage stock, and ensure a positive experience for customers and community members.
The role also involves occasional support for charity events, designing social media content using Canva, and selling items online via Facebook Marketplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and operate the café (coffee/drinks only) and op shop daily.
- Open and close the premises, ensuring security and cash handling procedures are followed.
- Prepare high-quality coffee and drinks (must have barista skills).
- Serve customers and create a welcoming, inclusive environment.
- Show empathy and understanding toward people affected by domestic violence, seniors, and those experiencing financial hardship.
- Maintain stock displays, merchandising, and cleanliness.
- Actively find, recruit, train, and retain a reliable volunteer team.
- Maintain Work Health and Safety standards in the shop and café.
- Respond to customer and phone enquiries professionally.
- Create engaging social media posts using Canva and manage the charity's accounts.
- Sell donated items online using Facebook Marketplace.
- Write clear, professional content for social media, event promotions, and volunteer recruitment (strong written communication skills essential).
- Assist with basic admin tasks and maintain accurate records.
- Support occasional charity events and assist with grant research (desirable).
- Drive short distances to our storage facility as required (company van provided).
About You
- Must have barista skills and be confident making quality coffee.
- Confident using a computer for social media, Canva, Facebook Marketplace sales, online volunteer recruitment, and admin tasks.
- Strong written communication skills for social media, emails, and promotional content.
- Holds a current QLD driver's licence.
- Able to provide a current police check (or willing to obtain one).
- Compassionate, respectful, and able to engage with people from all walks of life.
- Experience supporting or working with people in vulnerable situations is highly valued.
- Excellent spoken English skills (essential, due to the nature of our customer base).
- Well-organised, proactive, and able to follow direction from management.
- Comfortable with light lifting (up to 5kg) and basic merchandising tasks.
- Previous experience in retail, hospitality, or community work is an advantage.
- Grant research skills are desirable but not essential.
Hours & Pay
- Casual position: 8:00 am – 2:30 pm (5.5 hours + 30 min unpaid break), weekdays.
- Pay rate: $34.48 per hour (Retail Award Level 3 casual rate) plus weekend and public holiday penalties where applicable.
