As Geospatial Engineer, you will play a key role in advancing Climate Friendly's geospatial platform by designing, building, and maintaining scalable pipelines, APIs, and services that enable the ingestion, transformation, and analysis of spatial data.

The role exists to ensure that complex geospatial datasets are processed efficiently and reliably, supporting high-quality analytics, modelling, and machine learning workflows. By applying cloud-native practices, automation, and modern development tools, the Geospatial Engineer strengthens the platform's capacity to deliver accurate, accessible, and timely data to internal teams and external stakeholders.

The position contributes directly to the scalability and integrity of Climate Friendly's technology systems, enabling the organisation to expand its impact and deliver on its mission.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining automated pipelines for ingesting, transforming, validating, and storing geospatial datasets from multiple sources, ensuring data quality and maintainability
  • Building and maintaining services, functions, and APIs that allow efficient retrieval and sharing of spatial data across teams and applications
  • Writing, testing, and optimising code for geospatial data ingestion and transformation to improve reliability and performance
  • Applying containerisation, version control, and continuous integration practices to streamline development, testing, and deployment processes
  • Monitoring data pipelines and services, proactively troubleshooting errors, and resolving issues to minimise downtime and ensure data availability
  • Documenting data models, codebases, workflows, and system architecture to support team knowledge-sharing and long-term maintainability
  • Exploring and evaluating new geospatial technologies, tools, and services, and recommending improvements to enhance platform functionality and scalability
  • Collaborating with analysts, scientists, and non-technical stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions
  • Participating in agile workflows, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and code reviews, to contribute to a collaborative and high-performing team environment
  • Maintaining strong communication with the Product Manager and other team members to align technical work with broader platform and business objectives
  • Supporting training and onboarding of team members by sharing technical knowledge, tools, and coding standards

Qualifications

Essential


• 1–3 years' experience in geospatial or data engineering roles


• Tertiary qualifications in GIS, computer science, software engineering, or related fields


• Proficiency in Python and SQL


• Ability to decompose complex analytical problems using modular approaches


• Attention to detail in data validation, error handling,versioning and documentation


• Experience with development containers, CI/CD practices and version control (Git/GitHub)

Desirable


• Experience utilising Dask or Spark for scalable ETL and analytics pipelines


• Developing with geospatial libraries such as GDAL, Rasterio, GeoPandas


• Experience managing and cataloguing cloud data storage


• Experience with interactive development environments (e.g., JupyterLab)


• Experience in managing infrastructure for AI/ML-ops
