The Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) was established in 1974 and is the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health service provider in Western Australia, providing care to over 20,000 Aboriginal patients across four clinics in East Perth, Mirrabooka, Maddington and Midland. About The Position
The primary responsibility of the General Practitioner is to ensure the provision of high quality coordinated and integrated clinical teamwork and to provide general practice and health promotion service for the people accessing Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS).
Full-time and Part-time roles considered (Flexible with FTE).
Key Responsibilities
Clinical

  • Actively participate as a member of the DYHS team to ensure the delivery of culturally appropriate quality comprehensive primary, emergency and related health services and programs to DYHS's patients.
  • Provide professional leadership, guidance and support for all clinical, medical and health promotion staff.
  • Ensure that DYHS and its clients benefit from all Medicare approved service opportunities, including the active pursuit of and participation in initiatives such as the GP Chronic Condition Management Plans, Adult Health Checks and Child Health Checks as per National KPI standards as may be operative from time to time.
  • Pursue other health programs that may be approved or promoted from time to time by funding bodies or DYHS as a means of improving the health of and providing benefits to the DYHS patients.
  • Without removing medical responsibility and discretion for safe and responsible practice, at all times support and observe DYHS policies and procedures.
  • Support the development, evolution and maintenance of evidence based clinical policies and procedures.
  • Provide constructive contributions to, and recommendations for the updating of evidence-based discussions and best practice initiatives.
  • Support and participate in the processes necessary to maintain full accreditation status as defined by DYHS.
  • Undertake, support and participate in quality improvement initiatives in DYHS to improve service efficiency and maintain performance.
  • Explore opportunities to improve client and community satisfaction with services provided within DYHS.
  • Ensure complete electronic patient records by promptly entering all patient consultations at the point of consultation and related patient information into the electronic patient record systems in use by DYHS, where such recording is technologically supported.
  • Legitimately claim Medicare item numbers ensuring the accuracy of data and that full benefits of the system including new opportunities and item numbers are utilised as comprehensively as possible.
  • Wherever available, utilise to the fullest extent possible, all electronic patient recording, patient recall and billing systems as implemented by DYHS, including participation in their definition and testing by use, and implementation of these systems.
  • Participate in and promote productive positive networks of local and visiting specialists and allied health practitioners to ensure their access to DYHS clients (i.e. Dietician, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Renal, Dermatology, Psychiatry). Local initiatives include the active participation in the Medicare initiatives of GP Chronic Condition Management Plans and referrals wherever feasible.
  • Participate and support teaching and learning through the supervision of medical students, allied health students and general practice registrars.

Health Team

  • Provide active clinical support for professional training, mentoring, coaching and orientation of all clinical staff and student placements.
  • Support the development and application of consistent clinical policies, practices and procedures in each community clinic.
  • Support and promote the consistent practice of clinical risk management and medical emergency management strategies ensuring that clinical staffs are supported in these activities.
  • Provide professional guidance to clinical staff and feedback to senior management any concerns in relation to health service delivery issues.
  • Participate in the maintenance of a harmonious working environment by promoting compliance with the Equal Employment Opportunity Legislation, to create a workplace free from harassment and discrimination.
  • Promote a safe workplace in accordance with Work Health and Safety Legislation.

Administrative

  • Ensure that all mandatory and relevant documentary requirements of the position are met in a timely manner and that appropriate records are maintained.
  • Participate positively in the promotion of DYHS image and its effective management.

Selection Criteria

  • Qualifications:
  • General and Specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a General Practitioner.
  • Valid provider and prescriber number from the Health Insurance Commission of Australia on commencement of employment.
  • Vocational Registration, or fellowship with FRACGP or FACRRM.
  • Experience, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ongoing participation in Continuing Education programs as directed by either RACGP or ACRRM.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and strict adherence to generally accepted codes of conduct within all forms of communication.
  • Relevant client caseload management experience.
  • Information management skills and use of computer systems.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal Culture, values and health issues.
  • Team leadership/training experience.
  • Current basic life support skills.
  • Knowledge of Work Health & Safety, Industrial Relations and Equal Employment Opportunity Legislation.
  • Intermediate computer literacy skills.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience/or training in maternal & child health, men's health and emergencies.
  • Report writing.
  • Awareness of AGPAL standards and requirements for maintaining General Practice Accreditation.
  • Accredited Supervisor with RACGP.
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Current Working with Children Check.
  • Satisfactory National Police Clearance which is not older than 6 months.
  • Valid Drivers' License and willingness to travel as required.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
