Business Engagement & Scoping Lead

Primary Purpose

The Business Engagement & Scoping Lead is responsible for translating strategic business concepts and operational needs into actionable, investment-ready initiatives. The role works across internal teams, senior management, and external partners to frame problems, define value, and shape solutions. With a strong understanding of the aluminium process, infrastructure, and mining projects, this role requires commercial acumen, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to navigate ambiguity.

The successful candidate will act as a trusted partner to senior leaders and stakeholders, engaging directly with the business to understand project needs, scope opportunities, and develop business cases that align with the business's delivery capabilities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead collaborative scoping and opportunity shaping with internal business stakeholders, IS&T, and vendor teams.
  • Work closely with the senior management team to understand vague business concepts and translate them into structured initiatives.
  • Engage with operational technology stakeholders to develop internal statements of work and business cases.
  • Facilitate workshops with cross-functional stakeholders to define scope, risks, assumptions, and benefits.
  • Coordinate with enterprise architects, engineering SMEs, and delivery teams to estimate and validate solution options.
  • Prepare robust business cases including problem framing, cost models, ROI, and success metrics.
  • Shape investment-ready artefacts to support entry into governance processes.
  • Build shared understanding across internal and external teams through clear documentation and transition artefacts.
  • Support seamless handover into delivery teams with clarity on scope, value, and constraints.

Competencies & Experience

Essential:

  • Strong business and commercial acumen, with proven ability to scope and shape initiatives.
  • Understanding of aluminium processes, infrastructure, and mining projects.
  • Experience in ICT/digital solution consulting, pre-sales, or business strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop business cases and secure executive sponsorship.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills with the ability to bring diverse stakeholders to alignment.
  • Strong influencing skills and structured problem-solving approach.

Desirable:

  • Experience in asset-intensive or industrial sectors.
  • Familiarity with agile, hybrid, and stage-gated delivery environments.
