About the Ngaanyatjarra Council
Welcome to Ngaanyatjarra Lands, a vibrant tapestry of culture and community nestled within the vast beauty of the Australian desert. Home to approximately 1800 Yarnangu (Ngaanyatjarra people) across 11 unique communities, our council is dedicated to preserving and celebrating our rich heritage spanning over 10,000 years and 250,000 square kilometres.
Established in 1981, the Ngaanyatjarra Council Group (NCG) represents the interests of the Ngaanyatjarra People across the 11 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia. Employing in excess of 450 people, NCG provides a wide range of services, including health, utilities, construction, employment, community development, shops, roadhouses, art centres and land services. It is one of the largest and most successful Indigenous organisations in the country.
Our Vision:
Representing the aspirations and interests of our diverse communities, we are dedicated to keeping Yarnangu strong on Country.
The Opportunity:
An opportunity exists with the Ngaanyatjarra Land & Culture Program for a Ranger Coordinator to join our team based on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, WA. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person, to live and work in the Western Desert supporting Ngaanyatjarra people to look after and manage country and undertake cultural heritage protection. As part of the Ngaanyatjarra Land and Culture Program, the Coordinator will work with the Rangers and senior knowledge holders to implement the Ngaanyatjarra Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) Plan that covers 9.8 million ha of desert country.
Key aspects of the role include coordinating and managing remote fieldtrips, building a team and creating a positive team culture and working well with community to manage and look after country. The role requires mentoring and facilitating leadership in others and making good decisions in changing situations.
This is a unique opportunity to be immersed in community life and the rich cultural heritage of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. It is largely an outdoor role and would suit a practical person with a sense of adventure, who enjoys getting their hands dirty. You will be based remotely and be away from mainstream society for extended periods of time. This will be a good fit for someone who is mature, comfortable in the bush, has an interest in Australian Indigenous culture, and appreciates an environmentally rich and diverse landscape. You will also need resilience, a sense of adventure and ideally, a sense of humor

- Passionate and Dedicated: Committed to living and working in a remote Aboriginal community with enthusiasm and cultural sensitivity.
- Qualifications: Degree in relevant fields such as Anthropology (highly desirable), Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Ecology, Agricultural Sciences, or Physical Education. Extensive relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
