Youth After Hours Diversionary Service Worker
16 hours ago
CatholicCare Tasmania is the primary social services agency of the Catholic Church in Tasmania. We have 60 years' experience delivering a wide range of services and support to improve individual, family, and community wellbeing.
The Youth After-Hours Diversion Service (YADS) Pilot Program is a critical initiative designed to address service gaps in Tasmania's youth justice system. Operating in the Glenorchy, Bridgewater, Hobart and Bellerive Police Divisions, YADS provides after-hours on call support and referrals for young people in police custody or protection when a responsible adult is unavailable or additional caregiver support is needed. By facilitating early referrals and support, the program aims to assist young people in accessing police bail, thereby diverting them from extended custody, reoffending, or potential remand at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC).
The position operates during evenings, weekends, and public holidays and is after hours on call between the hours of 5pm – 9am. You will need to be available to take phone calls during this time and attend the Glenorchy, Bridgewater, Hobart and Bellerive Police Station and other services, as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver after-hours support and referral services for young people in police custody/protection, especially when a responsible adult is unavailable or caregiver support is inadequate.
- Facilitate early intervention measures to assist young people in accessing police bail, reducing the likelihood of extended custody, reoffending, or remand at AYDC.
- Conduct thorough intake and needs assessments for young people, addressing trauma-related behaviors and complex needs while ensuring safety and well-being.
- Work with young people to develop safety plans as required and support them in accessing safe accommodation. Where no accommodation is identified, liaise with Child Safety Services to determine the best solution.
- Establish effective communication and liaison with families, caregivers, and social supports to enhance outcomes for the young person.
- Participate in a rostered on-call system, including responding to after-hours and weekend callouts to provide active support.
- Uphold duty of care responsibilities and operate consistently within safeguarding frameworks, established policies, and procedures.
Eligibility
- Diploma Youth Work, Diploma Community Work, or Social Worker experience
- Current National Police Check or ability to obtain one
- Current RWVP
- Commitment to Safeguarding and understanding of responsibilities under the reportable conduct scheme
