The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Operations Manager with a strong background in stevedoring or related port operations or from warehousing/logistics or transport to join our Melbourne team. This is a hands-on leadership role within a 24/7, heavily unionised environment, requiring resilience, strong communication, and the ability to build trust while ensuring safety and operational excellence.

About the Role

As Operations Manager, you will:

  • Oversee daily stevedoring operations, ensuring safe and efficient loading/unloading of vessels.
  • Lead, motivate, and support a diverse workforce to achieve operational and safety targets.
  • Manage shift labour allocations and equipment to meet tight shipping schedules.
  • Interpret and apply Enterprise Agreements, working proactively to resolve issues and de-escalate conflict.
  • Foster a high-performance, safety-first culture through coaching, toolbox talks, and observations.
  • Work across a rotating roster of day, afternoon, and night shifts to support a true 24/7 operation.

Your Experience

To be successful, you will bring:

  • Proven operations management experience in stevedoring, wharf, or related heavy logistics operations, warehousing and logistics or transport.
  • Strong knowledge of working in a unionised environment, with the ability to interpret agreements and maintain constructive relationships.
  • A resilient and pragmatic leadership style with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and people management skills, with a focus on accountability and respect.
  • Strong planning, organisational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • A strong commitment to safety and compliance at all times.
