About us:
The Wilderness Society is powered by thousands of Australians from all walks of life. We work to support the living world that makes all life possible. Together, we believe in protecting, promoting and restoring wilderness and natural processes across Australia for the survival and ongoing evolution of life on Earth.
We have secured some of the biggest wins for Australian wilderness and nature: stopping the damming of the Franklin River forty years ago, keeping big oil out of the Great Australian Bight, or defending special forests the length and breadth of this continent.
Our values:
- Passion for our Purpose
- The Power of People to Make Change
- Organisational Independence and Integrity
- Compassion
- Commitment to Success in protecting the environment
About the role:
This is a hands-on delivery role in the Communications team focused on generating sharp, timely, and strategically aligned media coverage that supports the Wilderness Society's Organisational Campaign Plan.
The Media Adviser works closely with campaigners, digital teams, and organisational leads to ensure all media outputs reinforce our broader narrative strategy and support story arcs that resonate with audiences.
The Media Adviser plays a key role in shaping and framing stories that shift public conversation and influence those in power, working closely with campaigners to surface compelling, strategic narratives.
This role is ideal for someone with a few years' experience in journalism, public affairs or advocacy media who can confidently pitch, write, and coordinate fast-paced media engagement without losing clarity or narrative weight.
About you:
We are seeking a candidate who has the following knowledge and skills:
- Strong news sense and clear, confident writing ability
- Comfortable pitching and following up with journalists
- Able to distil complex campaign issues into emotionally resonant stories
- Highly organised and calm under pressure
- Values-aligned with a commitment to environmental justice
- Commitment to TWS purpose, vision and values and to success in the protection of the natural environment
- Demonstrated capability for narrative coherence
- Ability to work well with others, including colleagues located remotely
- Flexible attitude and ability to identify opportunities
Additional benefits:
- Five weeks of annual leave per year (pro rata for part-time staff)
- Genuine flexibility in working hours and location, with support for office and/or remote working
- 15 days personal leave (pro rata for part-time staff)
- 3 additional leave days at end of year
- Floating public holidays
- Generous Paid parental leave (subject to eligibility conditions)
- Commitment to supporting your professional development
- Access to Long Service Leave after five years of continuous service
- Access to our Employee Assistance Program (free counselling service)
- Regular 1:1 meetings for coaching and management support
- Performance conversations for reflections and growth
- When you start, a co-developed initial 3-month work plan
