About the role

A key member of the Budget Strategy team, the Senior Budget Analyst is responsible for conducting research and preparing high-quality submissions, reports, and briefing materials for senior management on a range of strategic financial management and budgeting issues.

A qualification in accounting, finance, or commerce is desirable. The role requires strong conceptual and analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent written communication, and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across the organisation.

About you

To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies, programs, or projects aligned with departmental objectives.
  • Ensure outputs are delivered on time, within scope, and meet quality standards.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform initiative or program development.
  • Prepare evidence-based advice, options, and recommendations to support decision-making.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare high-quality written materials, including briefing notes, reports, presentations, and correspondence.
  • Communicate information clearly and accurately to a range of audiences.
  • Plan and manage own work and coordinate tasks or small projects
  • Contribute to the identification and implementation of service or process improvements.
  • Use and maintain systems and databases accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensure data integrity and security, and support data-informed decision-making.

Key accountabilities

  • Proven ability to analyse complex issues, interpret data and policies, identify risks, and develop practical, evidence-based solutions.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and critical thinking in resolving problems and making decisions independently
  • Experience in developing, implementing, or evaluating policy, programs, or projects in a government or similar setting.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outputs within tight timeframes.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clear, concise, and accurate documents such as reports, briefings, and correspondence.
  • Confidence in conveying messages to a range of stakeholders and tailoring communication to suit the audience.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Skilled in influencing and negotiating with others to achieve positive outcomes and navigating sensitive issues with discretion.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools, data systems, or platforms relevant to the role (e.g., Excel, Power BI, PBCS, or other departmental systems).
  • Ability to interpret data and use insights to inform decision-making.

Mandatory requirements

  • Finance or Accounting Degree or equivalent.
  • CA/CPA qualification (desirable)
  • Strong Budget and Management Accounting background
