The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you'll play a key role in delivering culturally safe legal advice and representation to First Nations clients, supporting early intervention, outreach, and community legal education, while providing strong legal advocacy, mentoring and guiding your team to deliver high-quality, client-focused services. Each day, you will:

  • Support the delivery of high-quality legal services and representation to First Nations clients across criminal law matters.
  • Lead, manage, and mentor staff in the Dubbo cluster, including workload allocation, recruitment, training, and professional development.
  • Conduct complex legal matters in Local, District, and Supreme Courts, coordinating schedules and court appearances.
  • Participate in community engagement, legal education programs, and stakeholder liaison to enhance ALS presence.
  • Develop, review, and implement policies, procedures, and strategies to improve legal service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with professional, ethical, and workplace health and safety standards, including regional travel as required.

Your Story & Strengths

You are a skilled and motivated legal leader who understands and respects the cultural, social, and historical context that shapes the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You combine technical excellence and a deep commitment to community and justice. Key strengths include:

  • Current NSW Practising Certificate with experience in criminal law and legal representation for First Nations clients.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage legal teams, including workload allocation, supervision, and performance reviews.
  • Strong legal knowledge of criminal law, case law, and court procedures, with experience briefing and instructing Counsel.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and people management skills, with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to workplace health and safety, ethical standards, diversity practices, and performing delegated duties effectively.
  • Deep understanding of, and respect for, the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, communities, and staff.
