We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Diabetes Educator to join our multidisciplinary team in the role of Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 2 (CNC2) at the Royal North Shore Hospital Department of Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology. This pivotal role involves providing expert clinical leadership and expertise within the domains of a CNC2.

Where you'll be working

The Department of Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology Service at RNSH provides inpatient and outpatient care to approximately 320 paediatric patients with type 1 diabetes within the NSLHD. We empower children and families by providing access to new technologies and research, and by promoting family centred care. In addition to a 24 inpatient bed Paediatric Ward, we provide access to a short stay unit and to Hospital-in-the-Home. We cater for children from 0-18 years who transition to the adult service through a formal transition programme.

Our services include acute paediatric diabetes presentations and specialty outpatient clinics that encompass comprehensive diabetes education including structured education programs for those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, insulin pump therapy, Nurse Led Clinics and Transition Clinics.

What you'll be doing

The successful applicant will use their skills as a clinical nurse consultant within the team to lead the development of clinical guidelines and standards, to develop and implement improvements to clinical practice within the team, educate staff and initiate and lead research and quality improvement activities. This role is also responsible for the provision of a consultation service for paediatric diabetes across hospital services within the NSLHD. The successful candidate will likely participate in the development of state and national level diabetes working parties.

The CNC2 works both autonomously and collaboratively within the interdisciplinary team to improve the quality of patient care and promote desired outcomes for patients with diabetes. The CNC2 is responsible for the provision of clinical supervision to nursing staff and acts as a role model to other team members.

As a senior nurse, the successful candidate will work to advance nursing care in keeping with the vision and CORE values of the NSHLD, and have professional accountability to the Department Head and Director of Nursing and Midwifery.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Registered with Authority to Practice with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Minimum five years full time post graduate experience with 3 years full time equivalent in the specialty field. In addition the applicant must have an approved post graduate qualification (minimum Grad Diploma/Certificate level) or evidence of working towards Masters level qualification.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake quality improvement and research activities that influence and enhance clinical practice and implement change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a member of a multidisciplinary team and independently.
