SJ Wolfe Racing, led by respected head trainer Steve Wolfe, is a long-established and successful Western Australian thoroughbred racing operation with stables in Ascot and Albany. We are seeking a qualified and experienced Horse Trainer to join our professional team and support the training and preparation of our racehorse team.

About the Role

The Horse Trainer will be responsible for the development, conditioning and behavioural training of thoroughbred horses in accordance with the stable's training programs. The position requires high-level expertise in equine behaviour, conditioning, welfare, and preparation for racing. This is a hands-on, physically demanding role working closely with the Head Trainer, trackwork riders, stable staff and veterinary professionals.

Key Duties

The successful applicant will perform duties including:

  • Developing and implementing tailored training, handling and conditioning programs for young, pre-training and racing horses.
  • Teaching horses to respond to verbal and non-verbal cues; addressing behavioural and resistance issues.
  • Exercising, schooling and conditioning horses for racing and competition, including trackwork preparation.
  • Evaluating horses' fitness, temperament, soundness and progress, and adjusting training plans accordingly.
  • Monitoring health, identifying early signs of injury, illness or behavioural distress, and coordinating veterinary or farrier care where required.
  • Managing daily routines including feeding, grooming, tack checking and stable care.
  • Recording training data, behavioural assessments, health updates and performance outcomes.
  • Supervising and guiding stable staff in the correct handling and care of horses.
  • Preparing horses for transport, race days and trials, and liaising with owners and racing officials as necessary.

Skills & Experience Required

To be considered for this position, applicants must demonstrate:

  • Relevant qualifications in equine studies, racing, horse training, animal science, or related fields; or substantial relevant industry experience
  • Strong competency in handling, educating, conditioning and preparing thoroughbred horses.
  • Demonstrated experience addressing behavioural challenges and improving responsiveness.
  • Knowledge of equine anatomy, health, soundness and welfare practices.
  • Ability to maintain training records and follow structured programs.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a professional racing stable.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work early mornings, weekends and race-day duties as required.
