HORSE TRAINER JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a full time horse trainer to be based in the Swan Valley Western Australia to work with our stable of competition horses participating in the dressage and show jumping disciplines. You will need to be experienced in training and elite conditioning horses in preparation for local and interstate competitions. Candidates with experience of horse training at an international level will be looked at favourably.

There will be a need to work through the spectrum of seasoned competitors and younger horses at their initial stages of training.

Responsibilities

  • Training Plan Development: training programs for horses based on their individual needs with programmes planned out over a two to five year period. Focusing on horse's temperament, physical condition, and skill level to create a structured program that focuses on obedience, performance enhancement and skill development. Assess the progress of horses and adjust training programmes and modify as required.
  • Dressage: reinforcing the foundation of trust and respect between horse and trainer, ensuring that the horse understands all commands to ensure safety of riders. This will focus on developing the horse's obedience, suppleness and precision of movements to ensure correct collection, responsiveness and cues from the rider.
  • Ground Work and Lunging: Design training plans that include flatwork exercises, lateral movements and advanced dressage manoeuvres. Train horses for dressage and show jumping. Based on groundwork through lunging, long lining and desensitisation exercises to develop balance, suppleness and responsiveness.
  • Show Jumping Trainer: Show jumping trainers specialize in training horses and riders for the sport of show jumping, where horse and rider navigate a course of obstacles. They focus on developing the horse's jumping technique, agility, and accuracy. Show jumping trainers work on exercises such as gridwork, gymnastic jumping, and course practice to improve the horse's jumping skills.
  • Wellness: Monitor and maintain the health of horses, including feeding, grooming, and administering medications or supplements. Assist in coordinating with veterinarians and farriers as needed. Overseeing the horse's nutrition and provide recommendations for proper feeding and care.
  • Communication with Owners and Riders: You will be required to liaise with horse owners and riders, providing guidance, feedback, and instruction on the progression of horse training to achieve identified performance goals.
  • Groom: at competitions to ensure exceptional presentation of horses and ensure all equipment is maintained.
  • Talent Identification: Assist in selecting horses for purchase and breeding.
  • Students: Teach horsemanship skills to riders and students.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a horse trainer.
  • Knowledge of equine behaviour and anatomy.
  • Exceptional horsemanship skills.
  • Ability to work with horses of all ages and training levels.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of current best practices in horse education and safety.
  • Physical stamina and strength to work with horses.
  • Ability to work with a team and independently.
  • Budgeting, book keeping and planning as related to the training programme developed.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed within your 38 hour working week.

Education and Training

  • Qualifications and / or training certificates from a recognised training provider.

o All applicants must have a relevant qualification and 2 years full time or equivalent part-time professional experience or, in the absence of a qualification a minimum of 3-years full time or equivalent part-time professional experience in the role as a horse trainer or apprentice to a trainer is necessary.

Pay

  • Fulltime $77,200 per annum together with statutory superannuation and annual leave.
