About the Role

We are seeking a Senior AWS Data Platform Engineer to join our Sydney team. This role goes beyond hands-on engineering: you will act as a subject matter expert (SME) in AWS data services, driving initiatives independently and partnering closely with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing data platforms.

Unlike mid-level roles, this position requires senior expertise, leadership, and autonomy — we are looking for someone who can design solutions end-to-end and bring thought leadership to client engagements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and optimisation of data platforms and pipelines on AWS (e.g., Redshift, Glue, Lambda, S3, EMR, Step Functions).
  • Act as a technical SME, advising internal teams and clients on data engineering best practices.
  • Independently drive initiatives, ensuring alignment with business and technical objectives.
  • Collaborate with product, analytics, and business teams to improve data accessibility, governance, and value creation.
  • Ensure security, cost-efficiency, and performance optimisation across data workloads.
  • Mentor and coach less experienced engineers, raising the overall capability of the team.

Key Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in data engineering / cloud data platforms, with at least 3+ years in AWS.
  • Proven expertise in managing large-scale data warehouses and ETL/ELT pipelines using Redshift, Glue, Lambda, S3, Athena, EMR, or Kinesis.
  • Strong skills in SQL, Python, and/or PySpark for data transformation and optimisation.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects independently with minimal oversight.
  • Strong knowledge of data modelling, performance tuning, and pipeline optimisation.
  • Excellent communication skills to influence both technical and business stakeholders.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with dbt, Airflow, or other orchestration tools.
  • Familiarity with data governance, security, and compliance frameworks.
  • Knowledge of BI/visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, QuickSight).
  • Prior consulting or client-facing experience as a technical lead.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid role based in Sydney CBD.
  • 3 days a week at the office, with flexibility for remote work on other days.
