At GBR Tours, we offer unparalleled scuba diving and snorkelling adventures on the Great Barrier Reef. Based in Cairns, our boutique floating hotel, MV Reef Encounter, provides luxurious overnight stays for up to 42 guests, exploring stunning reef locations. Our day vessel, MV Reef Experience, caters to up to 100 passengers, offering daily transfers and access to exquisite dive and snorkel sites. Our dedicated crew ensures an exceptional reef experience, from snorkeling and diving to helicopter tours and dining.

Position Purpose

We are seeking a versatile and dynamic Head Marine Engineer / Operations Assistant to manage and maintain our fleet of vessels while assisting with daily operations. This role is integral to ensuring our vessels run smoothly and efficiently, balancing engineering tasks with operational support. Flexibility is key, as this role involves both sea and land-based work, with full-time, flexible hours. Availability for an immediate start is preferred.

Specific Duties:

Vessel Engineering and Maintenance

  • Oversee and ensure the safe and efficient operation of engine rooms, systems, and machinery.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and repair work on engines, generators, pumps, and other machinery.
  • Maintain and repair electrical systems, including lighting, navigation, and communication equipment.
  • Assist with equipment loading/unloading and re-fueling operations.
  • Keep detailed records of maintenance/repair work and report to the Operations Manager.
  • Support and collaborate with the Operations Manager, Operations Assistant, Vessel Masters, Engineers, Dive Team, and crew.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in workshops, engine rooms, and equipment storage.
  • Handle complex repairs and escalate issues as needed.
  • Manage projects like refits and vessel purchases/sales.
  • Order parts and maintain an organized inventory.
  • Apply engineering budget efficiently and plan financially.

Daily Operations

  • Liaise with relevant personnel on vessel maintenance and operations.
  • Regularly inspect vessels and coordinate repairs to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Oversee quality control of vessel operations and services.
  • Manage supplier coordination and logistics for vessel maintenance.
  • Negotiate costs with suppliers and improve vessel services and safety.

Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S)

  • Uphold the highest safety standards and comply with WH&S policies.
  • Conduct safety audits, risk management, and training.
  • Adhere to incident reporting procedures.

General Duties

  • Represent GBR Tours positively and professionally.
  • Maintain cleanliness and adhere to dress-code standards.
  • Foster a friendly, approachable demeanor with employees, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Handle equipment with care and complete all assigned duties.
  • Attend meetings and training as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

  • MED II (preferably MED I) certification.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in a similar role.
  • Queensland C Class Driver's Licence.
  • CPR Certificate (HLTAID009) or Equivalent.
  • First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011) or Equivalent.
  • Must be living in CAIRNS already and a permanent Australian resident. We do not offer sponsorship.
  • Availability for an immediate start is preferred.

Desirable:

  • Skipper qualifications: Coxswains, Master Class V or IV.
  • Diving certification.
  • Experience in the Marine Tourism Industry.
  • Additional certificates in WHS, welding, fabrication, shipwright, carpentry, diesel fitting, or mechanics.
  • Business Degree.
  • Computer literacy.
