About usThe Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.
The QFD is an organisation that is committed to reframing the department's relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through activities identified in the QFD Reframing the Relationship Plan, contributing to Closing the Gap outcomes and building our cultural capability.
Purpose of roleAs a Senior Software Developer (AO6) in our Frontline IT Solutions and Services Branch within the Information and Technology Division, you will play a key role in the organisation by bringing your expertise in software design, development, and technical leadership to QFD.
The Fire and Rescue IT Solutions team is responsible for providing contemporary and innovative technology solutions and services to meet the operational needs of the fire and rescue capability and the volunteers that are a critical element of providing coverage across Queensland. The Software Development team plans, designs, builds, tests and releases new software applications that are fit for purpose technology solutions, ensuring that corporate technology is aligned to operational needs and support maximum adoption of digital solutions and services.
Reporting to the Solutions Delivery Manager, Community Safety Systems and Software Development, you will be responsible for the technical design and development of applications and system changes related to business requirements, and developing software development processes, procedures and policies, ensuring these are effectively maintained. You will work in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment where you will take ownership of projects and initiatives to modernise and automate the development and delivery of IT solutions. You will work closely with key stakeholders to review, manage and identify issues, risks and impacts in relation to system requirements, ensuring solutions are consolidated and consistent across the business areas to support operational and organisational capability.
Key requirementsHighly desirable requirements
- Experience in one or more of the following technical specialties: Java language; Java Server Pages; HTML; JavaScript; Cascading Style Sheets; Spring Projects and ORM frameworks.
- Database development with Oracle, Structured Query Language (SQL) and Procedural Language/SQL
- Awareness and understanding of Agile practices and way of working, PRINCE2 or Agile software development methods.
- Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) DevOps
- A degree level qualification in Information Technology or Computer Science would be highly regarded.
Special requirements
- This role may require work to be performed out-of-business hours and in response to crisis management in support of operational employees who play a vital role in providing the 24/7, 365 days a year emergency response and public safety capability the organisation delivers to the Queensland community.
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Contribute to all stages of the software development process, including the design, code, review, test, correct and document complex system components from supplied specifications using agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result.
- Translate and interpret system requirements in the form of functional specifications and/or user stories into technical specifications to deliver high quality and well-designed software that meets reliability and performance expectations, and achieves desired business outcomes,
- Contribute to defining the strategic direction and associated roadmaps for the technical criteria for product/component selection to ensure solutions meet business needs into the future.
- Provide guidance to team members on the design and programming solutions associated with the development, maintenance and enhancement of complex high availability corporate systems and services.
- Develop, maintain and collaborate with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to manage project requirements, and define and implement software application programming interfaces that provide seamless data exchange between various systems.
- Manage and administer AWS DevOps services, including pipelines, repositories and artifacts to ensure efficient continuous integration, delivery and deployment processes and effective collaboration among development teams.
- Develop and maintain technical specifications and as built documentation for supported applications and solutions, ensuring they are developed and maintained in accordance with relevant standards and frameworks
- Maintain application performance, security and system integrity in delivering timely client focused support and incident resolution of applications in a 24/7 operational environment.
