Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner.  AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

AEMO's System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO's end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market.

As Engineer in Onboarding & Connections, you'll have the unique opportunity to see your work come to life, visiting projects you've helped shape and forging long-term partnerships with key players in the energy sector. You'll play a pivotal role in mentoring junior team members, while also building your professional profile through active participation in industry forums, working groups, conferences, and professional memberships.

Reporting to a Team Lead-Onboarding and Connections, this role offers flexibility in location and can be based in any Australian state. AEMO provides an essential service and are committed to supporting flexible work arrangements. Our strong team culture, robust communication tools, and collaborative structures ensure every team member stay connected, both within the team and across the broader AEMO organisation.

What you will be doing

  • Work collaboratively with network service providers, connection applicants and/or original equipment manufacturers to assess and negotiate performance standards, as well as progress commissioning activities.
  • Conduct power system simulations and analysis to determine grid connection requirements for new large-scale generators, including the assessment of generator models, reactive power plants and control systems.
  • Interpret and justify simulation outcomes, draw conclusions, and provide robust recommendations on technical performance requirements.
  • Prepare clear, concise and high quality written and verbal communication to inform internal or external stakeholders on a range of issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve AEMO's analysis/reporting methods and tools to meet business requirements and increase the efficiency of team operations.

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in leading and contributing to project teams, with a proven ability to deliver outcomes through pragmatic, service-orientated approach to problem solving.
  • Well-developed experience in managing generator connection processes, with experience in assessing and resolving generator and power system performance issues.
  • Strong understanding of the technical issues influencing large-scale infrastructure projects, with the ability to navigate negotiations where commercial and reputational considerations intersect with engineering requirements.
  • Knowledge of the electricity industry, NEM dispatch process, generator behaviour and network constraints.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, hybrid options, and additional leave options.

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
