Northern Region Underwriting Manager is primarily responsible for managing the Arch Australia's Casualty portfolio and Underwriting staff (UW) for the Northern Region (NSW and QLD). Northern Region Underwriting Manager is responsible for underwriting and managing a profitable book of Casualty business within the Northern Region market in accordance with Arch's written underwriting guidelines.
Northern Region Underwriting Manager works closely with the Underwriting Manager- Casualty, Regional Manager and line Underwriters of all classes to develop and execute the team's operating strategy in order to achieve annual and long-term performance goals.
As a senior member of the Arch's business in Australia, Northern Region Underwriting Manager is responsible for raising Arch's visibility and standing in the Northern Region marketplace through productive marketing efforts, product development and the writing of profitable new and renewal business.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Underwrite new and renewal Casualty business in accordance with allocated underwriting authority level.
- Achieving planned underwriting results for new and renewal business and identifying requirements to meet the Region's business needs.
- Leading and managing a team of Region Casualty underwriters and ensuring compliance with all business policies and procedures.
- Is accountable for the Casualty Region Growth Strategy.
- Is responsible for Casualty's Region distribution strategy.
- Provide monthly End of Month Reporting on the Region Casualty book.
- Provide input for the Region for the Arch Australia Line of Business Review.
- Attends calls and meetings with local and group managers in London, as required.
- Ensure accurate entry of submissions, quotes and bound policies and recording of underwriting information in Arch's underwriting systems.
- Conduct account clearance procedures for multi-national risks, as required.
- Ensure and manage the underwriting and servicing of risks is both timely and accurate whilst adhering to all Arch underwriting/ compliance guidelines, service standards and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate individual risk underwriting actions with other departments to assure the highest level of customer satisfaction while meeting production and business goals.
- Provide regular direction and leadership to local Casualty underwriting team to achieve specific line of business and broader corporate strategic objectives.
- Conduct Peer Reviews and ensure accurate completion and/or review of Peer sheets.
- Collaborate with Regional Manager - Australia, and the Casualty Underwriting Manager on the development of annual and long-term operating plans.
- Collaborate with Managers and Underwriters within the Region to drive multi line growth and build relationships in the Region.
- Perform product development and marketing activities including identifying producer relationships within assigned market to optimize best solutions for distribution; identify and suggest new and modified products; identify producers for business/marketing programs; and analyse producers and market opportunities.
- Monitor and report on notable Claims activity within the portfolio to Casualty Manager Underwriting and Regional Manager on a monthly basis.
- Coordinate with the Casualty Underwriting Manager, and Casualty Line of Business Head on all ceded reinsurance actions in accordance with Arch guidelines.
- Maintain appropriate business activity logs to record submission activity, or premium activity for management reports.
- Assist in the resolution of outstanding premium receivable issues, when directed.
- Stay abreast of industry topics and changes in legislation impacting the line of business.
People management responsibilities:
- Communicate organizational goals with team members and clarify set expectations.
- Monitor employees' productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching.
- Oversee employee's performance; organize regular 1:1 meeting to discuss performance, manage underperformance, conduct annual performance reviews, support setting annual goals.
- Provide guidance, support and mentoring to the employees.
- Identify development needs of employees and discuss career development aspirations.
- Review leave requests as per the policies, oversee team operation, manage employees' workload and attendance.
- Conduct disciplinary conversations when required.
- Manage recruitment process within reasonable timeframe; identify recruitment needs, conduct interviews and provide feedback.
- Prepare and manage onboarding of new employees; prepare new employee's training.
- Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures is undertaken.

- Strong attention to detail.
- Flexibility, multi- tasking and ability to deliver initiatives within a short timescale.
Qualifications
- Tertiary degree, preferable in finance, commerce, law, accounting or similar- desired.
- Professional certifications within the insurance industry – preferred but not essential.
Experience
- Minimum 5-10 years of work experience in the Australian/New Zealand D&O insurance markets.
- Strong working knowledge and large pool of existing broker/client relationships in the Australian/New Zealand D&O insurance markets.
- Experience managing a team or demonstrated aptitude to operate in a leadership position.
