Join the team and be a Discovery Guide (Tour Guide) and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna, and Aboriginal heritage.

About the role

The Southern Ranges Branch is currently seeking to appoint a Discovery Guide to deliver guided tours, walks and learning experiences for visitors of Yarrangobilly area to foster community awareness, appreciation and understanding for conserving the state's natural and cultural heritage.

This educational role will focus on conducting weekday and weekend excursions tours for visitors and  school groups, .   The primary focus of the guided tours  are the limestone caves of which there are several open to the public.

The team at Yarrangobilly work in a multi-faceted  environment with a diversity of assets to maintain as part of a remote operation. All staff may be called on to provide customer service in the visitor centre by phone, email and face-to face, conduct hygiene duties and minor maintenance tasks to ensure the  effective operations of the Yarrangobilly precinct. This role is also responsible for reporting any faults or breakdowns to their supervisor (such as malfunctioning cave lighting), as well as any suspicious behaviour from the public.

About you

Your strong communication skills are paramount to the success of this role. You will be delivering programs to different stakeholders and will need to be able to think on your feet to respond to various questions and situations. Self-management is important for this role as there may be times you will be working alone and will need to ensure safety is a priority meeting the required Work Health Safety standards. Experience in guiding, instructing, teaching and education will be highly valued along with your demonstrated passion for sharing knowledge of geography, geology, science and history, the Australian environment and an awareness of NPWS values.

Essential requirements

  • Current Working with Children check or ability to obtain
  • Proven practical experience or ability to develop skills in interpretive and educational guiding or  delivering training or classroom experiences
  • Understanding of the role of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and a broad knowledge of the natural values and cultural history of the local area.
  • Awareness of Aboriginal Culture
  • Senior First Aid certificate
