Job Description**
The Swan Region encompasses both the metropolitan Perth and the Peel region. It extends along the west coast from Lancelin in the north to south of Mandurah and east to the edge of the Wheatbelt from Quindanning to Bolgart. The Swan Region employs over 200 staff across multiple work centres (Mandurah, Wanneroo, Yanchep, Hillarys, Mundaring, Jarrahdale and Dwellingup) with the regional headquarters based at Crawley.

We are currently seeking to establish a pool of suitable applicants for the role of Ranger (Marine and Riverpark).

Under the immediate direction of the Senior Ranger (Marine)/ Senior Ranger (Riverpark), the ranger:

  • Carries out programmed operational activities and field logistical support for the metropolitan Marine Parks and the Swan Canning Riverpark; including conservation, visitor services, commercial operator liaison and the delivery of water quality programs as directed.
  • Assists in emergency response, marine fauna management and delivering education and interpretive programs.
  • Undertakes compliance patrols, maintains and skippers departmental vessels and upkeep of equipment.
  • Implements works programs consistent with departmental guidelines, policies and management plans.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should address the following four (4) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than four (4) pages in total.

  • Ability to participate in (Grade 1) and implement (Grade 2) operational plans and works programs associated visitor management and natural resource management with an emphasis on the estuarine and marine environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability for (Grade 1) or experience in (Grade 2) patrol and enforcement activities, and liaison with the public, commercial tourism operators, community groups, Indigenous groups, other government agencies and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge (Grade 1) and experience (Grade 2) in the logistics of vessels, and the operation and skippering of vessels up to 12 metres in length requiring a Coxswain Grade 1 (NSCV Near Coastal) as a minimum certificate of competency, with ability to attain (Grade 1) or holding (Grade 2) such a certificate with documented evidence of experience in working on commercial vessels in survey (via a certified sea-service book) or equivalent.
  • Physically fit and hold a minimum approved Rescue Diver Certification in SCUBA diving qualification or equivalent and be willing to obtain a Scientific diver SCUBA qualification (Grade 2) or hold a minimum recognised SCUBA diving qualification with an ability to progress to Scientific Diver SCUBA qualification (Grade 1).
