ABOUT ARTLINK

Artlink is a print and online publisher established in 1981 with a focus on contemporary art across the Australia and Asia‑Pacific region. Based in Tarntanya/Adelaide, Artlink engages its readership through a wide-ranging community of writers including artists and art-historians, curators, critics, specialist scholars and emerging writers. We produce three thematic issues per year (print and digital) and regular online reviews and features; our collaborative editorial agenda is alert to critical art practices and the big issues of our time, which Artlink positions within a national conversation and a global context.

Artlink fosters diverse voices and showcases a wide range of artists and exhibitions, including a biennial Indigenous-led focus issue and substantive First Nations content. We provide paid work and professional development opportunities for writers and editors, and we are committed to sustainable economic and business models in the arts with equal opportunities for creative workers.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Assistant Editor plays an integral role in Artlink's publishing team, working closely with the Editor and undertaking a range of publishing and administrative duties. Applicants should have proven editorial experience, with preference given to those who have worked in the arts sector (such as in an arts institution, educational setting, or publishing environment). The position requires a balance of self-directed initiative, systems maintenance and development, and detail-oriented editorial tasks. Flexibility, independence, and the ability to work intuitively will be highly valued.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Support the Editor to plan, manage and implement a busy publication schedule
  • Hands-on editorial work including commissioning, contracting and editing submissions: structural and copy-edits, proof reading, image sourcing, copyright, licensing agreements and managing style guides
  • Identify opportunities and develop written content (i.e., reviews, profiles) for publication in a range of Artlink contexts
  • Help maintain the Artlink website and digital archive, and support strategies to extend its reach
  • Set daily, weekly and longer-term goals and priorities in consultation with the team and manage workflow to achieve timely deliverables and outcomes
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with individuals and all partners and arts organisations, with a strong focus on the South Australian visual art sector
  • Represent Artlink at public events and art industry networks as required
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications, reports and acquittals to state and commonwealth governments, foundations and other funding bodies
  • Maintain efficient administrative processes, procedures and systems to streamline Artlink's core business
  • Work closely with the Artlink team and our advertisers and subcontractors (i.e., designers, printers) to ensure publishing, marketing and promotions are accurate, timely and on-brand

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Strong working knowledge of contemporary art in Australia with tertiary qualifications in visual arts or a related field and a sound understanding of Artlink's work
  • Demonstrated experience in editing and/or proof-reading and art writing for publication
  • Experience in using a range of digital technologies and programs, including MS Office, Google Docs, social media, Mailchimp, photo-editing software and basic website maintenance
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral form
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to various tasks
  • Punctual, professional, organised and collegial
