senior emergency registrar

Challis Recruitment is working with a leading Melbourne health service to recruit an experienced Senior Emergency Registrar. As a specialist medical recruitment agency with nearly two decades of expertise supporting healthcare employers Australia-wide, we focus on matching exceptional doctors with departments committed to delivering outstanding patient care.
THE POSITIONThis Senior Emergency Registrar role is integral to the delivery of high-quality emergency care within a busy, mixed adult–paediatric Emergency Department. It is ideally suited to an experienced clinician who demonstrates strong clinical acumen, sound judgement and the ability to manage a diverse and often high-acuity case mix within a supportive, team-based environment.
The position encompasses advanced clinical responsibilities, including leading resuscitation and acute management, coordinating complex patient care, and ensuring timely, safe decision-making. Senior Registrars also play a key supervisory role, providing guidance, oversight and structured clinical teaching for junior doctors and HMOs, and contributing to a positive, patient-centred departmental culture.
The department holds 24-month ACEM accreditation, offering a robust training environment with access to experienced FACEM leadership, dedicated fellowship teaching and active exam preparation programs. Senior Registrars are well supported to refine their leadership capability, broaden their procedural experience and build confidence in the management of complex and critically unwell patients.
This position sits within a department undergoing significant expansion and service enhancement, with a newly redeveloped, purpose-built Emergency Department to open in the near future. The role provides exposure to a rapidly growing service, a modern clinical environment, and the opportunity to be part of an evolving emergency medicine workforce. Importantly, the employer offers full visa sponsorship for eligible international applicants.
THE DEPARTMENT
The Emergency Department is a busy, mixed adult–paediatric service, seeing approximately 60,000–70,000 presentations annually, including around 20% paediatric cases. It provides comprehensive emergency care to one of Melbourne's fastest-growing communities, as reflected in the development of a new, purpose-built Emergency Department, scheduled to open in 2026.
This major expansion will significantly increase treatment capacity, enhance patient flow, safety, and the overall clinical environment.
The department is ACEM-accredited for 24 months and supported by experienced senior leadership, maintaining a strong clinical culture focused on high-quality care, structured education and continuous improvement.
THE HOSPITAL
This major public hospital is part of a dynamic Melbourne health service providing high-quality care to one of the city's fastest-growing regions. Recent upgrades, including a new ICU, additional theatres and expanded inpatient capacity, have increased the campus to nearly 300 beds, with further growth underway across emergency, surgical and specialist services.
The organisation is known for its collaborative culture, strong clinical governance and commitment to developing the next generation of clinicians through structured education and specialist training programs.
Overall, it offers excellent clinical exposure, strong senior support and the chance to work within a modern, rapidly evolving health service serving a diverse metropolitan community.
THE LOCATION
Melbourne offers an unbeatable lifestyle, blending world-class healthcare, education and housing with a vibrant cultural scene. Known for its exceptional food, coffee and arts, the city buzzes with festivals, sports and entertainment all year round. With excellent public transport, diverse family-friendly suburbs and a mild, temperate climate, Melbourne is a welcoming, dynamic place to live and work—offering something for everyone.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Registration (or eligibility for registration) with AHPRA as a medical practitioner.
Demonstrated senior-level experience in emergency medicine, including the ability to manage high-acuity and complex presentations in a busy emergency setting.
Capability to supervise, support and provide clinical education to junior medical staff and medical officers.
Competence in leading resuscitation and multidisciplinary coordination during critical presentations.
Eligibility to meet the hospital's credentialing requirements for a senior emergency medicine role.
Required attributes include strong communication skills, a commitment to high-quality patient care, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative and fast-paced team environment.
