You’ll join the team responsible for connecting the University with core stakeholders including the media, government, donors, alumni, volunteers and the broader community. The Division is made up of collaborative and high performing teams, including Corporate Communications, Government Relations, Development, Centre for Ideas, News & Content, External Engagement and Operations.
**Why your role Matters**:
As Communications Manager - External you’ll collaborate with a range of professional and academic stakeholders to provide a centralised and trusted advisory service that develops and delivers UNSW’s external communication activities.
Supporting the Head of Communications and the Executive Director Strategic Communications, this position works to promote the activities of the University through external channels such as the media, strengthening the UNSW brand while effectively managing issues to ensure the University’s reputation is enhanced and appropriately protected.
Reporting to the Head of Communications, the role leads a team of up to four direct reports working to uphold the UNSW’s profile as an international leader in research and teaching. Your day-to-day work includes**:
- Delivering consistent and professional communications that align with UNSW’s strategic objectives.
- Writing, pitching and distributing media releases and stories, organising media events and liaising with media to promote the activities, research and achievements of the University and its academics.
- Advising senior stakeholders and providing expert direction on the development and delivery of effective communication strategies.
- Developing and delivering communications plans and briefings regarding issues impacting the University.
- Advising on brand guidelines, ensuring all published content is of a high quality and aligned to UNSW’s voice and strategic interests.
- Responding to media queries, including requests for expert comment and analysis, building strong working media relationships.
- Collaborating with relevant teams across the University to effectively manage risk, including but not limited to Security, Estate Management, Risk and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
- Enhancing UNSW’s communications through considered analysis and review.
**Who you are**:We’re looking for a stand-out communicator with a relevant degree and significant experience in media engagement and corporate communications with:
- A proven record of developing successful, creative communications strategies and plans and leading the implementation to deliver enhanced engagement within the Higher Education sector or similar.
- In-depth understanding of the target audience, with a highly effective writing style and expertise in high-impact messaging to various audiences.
- Demonstrated experience in distilling complex information into straight forward communications to a diverse group of stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to work in demanding and high-profile situations and issues management.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to navigate competing deadlines.
- Proven ability to liaise effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders, and exercise creativity and enthusiasm in the development of new initiatives.
