The Spatial Decisions Group applies spatial informatics and data science for environmental decision-making in tropical ocean regions. Their focus areas include climate change, biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, and ocean governance. We are currently seeking a Conservation Informatics Research Associate to join our team on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 12 months.

This role will implement data-driven decision support systems and informatics to support sustainability and conservation actions in the marine environment. A key priority is to contribute to the objectives of the newly established

Marine Conservation Program (MARCOP),

a partnership between the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and Macquarie University.- Analysing large-scale social, economic, ecological and conservation data in applied conservation contexts- Integrating and interpreting big data sources to improve conservation outcomes and strategic interventions.-
- Providing technical expertise in the development and implementation of data-driven tools and systems for practical conservation solutions; and,- Supporting capacity building, including the development of training materials and other knowledge products.

Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to research and development projects within MARCOP, focusing on innovative, applied data solutions for marine and coastal conservation challenges.-
- Develop and implement data models, algorithms, and decision support tools tailored to practical conservation needs; and- Work closely with conservation professionals and stakeholders to integrate data-driven approaches into on-the-ground conservation strategies.
- We are looking for a PhD graduate with the following background and skills:_- Expertise in environmental or conservation informatics, data science, or a related field.-
- Excellent collaboration skills and experience working with interdisciplinary teams; and,- Experience or familiarity with marine science and conservation, particularly in the Western Indian Ocean and/or Coral Triangle is a plus
