**About the team**:
The Departments Shared Services Hub provides payroll services under the Whole-of-Government Shared Services Programme. The Shared Services Hub presents a unique opportunity to be involved in developing innovative service delivery arrangements, with an approach to collaboration and sharing of resources that has the potential to add value to not only existing customers but to set the scene for new ways of working across the Australian Public Services.
The Payroll team manages the payroll services for client agencies to enable them to increase productivity and concentrate on their core business. We are responsible for the management and administration of all payroll systems and processes. We are committed to consistently improving service standards through innovation, systems, and process enhancements.
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Manager that has:
- Demonstrated experience in developing and leading high performing teams, including building a culture of continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate a positive team culture based on accountability and inclusion. This involves actively engaging and communicating with team members to support individual development and work outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge in complex Payroll administration in a government environment.
- Able to contribute to the development of team objectives for short term tasks and strategic planning for longer-term initiatives
- Strong written, communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to effectively negotiate and influence outcomes
- Exceptional customer service skills, including using initiative and the ability to foster effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels
- Strong problem-solving skills, judgement and analytical skills
- Excellent organisational skills, including energy and drive, and the ability to manage priorities to achieve results

**What you will do**:
As the Payroll Assistant Manager, you will be required to undertake work that is complex in nature, work under limited direction with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability.
As the Payroll Assistant Manager, you will:
- Lead and manage the payroll team ensuring deadlines and statutory obligations are effectively met including processing of fortnightly pays, end of month and end of financial year activities and maintenance of accurate employee records.
- Undertake systems administration and reporting to ensure the delivery of high-quality payroll services.
- Coach and manage team members to develop their skills and oversee their workload including:
- providing clarity around roles, expectations and responsibilities. Engage in performance discussions, identify training and development opportunities.
- using on the job opportunities to transfer knowledge and develop capability
- provide continuous feedback
- research and recommend training opportunities to improve and enhance the team skill set
- review personal and team performance and seek feedback from line management and stakeholders to confirm satisfaction.
- Perform and quality assure payroll processes at the end of each pay cycle to ensure employees are paid correctly, deduction authorities receive the required information, and the reconciliation of fortnightly pays is completed.
- Assist in identifying, developing, implementing and reviewing business processes that improve the overall operational efficiency of the team.
- Use your analytical, judgement and conceptual skills in the development and provision of reports and advice to meet reporting obligations.
- Work with IT and undertake coordinator functions and activities to ensure the system is maintained to meet business requirements.
- Provide high level client service on more complex issues related to payroll transactions and conditions.
