The Australian Education Union (AEU) is the federal union for teachers, principals, support staff and all educators working in public education.

The AEU currently represents more than 2500 Aboriginal Educators and Torres Strait Islander Educators in our most rapidly growing membership segment.

**The Role**
As the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Officer, your role is to advocate for quality teaching and learning for Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples through research and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders including the community, AEU members, government, industry organisations and the education sector.

In this role you will:

- Develop strategies to increase member participation of Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
- Research and advocate issues facing Aboriginal Teachers and Students and Torres Strait Islander Teachers and Students
- Develop and nurture relationships with Aboriginal Communities and Torres Strait Islander Communities including members, non-members and external stakeholders
- Contribute to the objectives, policies and campaigns to improve teaching and learning for Aboriginal Members and Students and Torres Strait Islander Members and Students
- Aboriginality is a genuine occupational requirement as this role is specifically aimed at increasing the number of Aboriginal Teachers and Torres Strait Islander Teachers in public education and ensuring high quality educational outcomes for all Aboriginal Children and Torres Strait Islander Children. The successful applicant must be an Aboriginal Person and/or Torres Strait Islander Person._

**Skills Required**:
To be successful for this position, you will have a track record engaging with Aboriginal Communities and Torres Strait Islander Communities and an understanding of issues within the education sector. You will also have:

- Expertise in developing and brokering strong networks and relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Well developed collaborating, negotiating and influencing skills.
- High level written communication skills.
- Capability in conducting research and analysis.
- Ability to provide strategic advice specifically for the purposes of advocacy, social change or campaigning.
