**IN A NUTSHELL**
Bellroy's Data team is searching for an analyst/technologist who loves designing and improving workflows and spreadsheets to help us make better decisions and simplify data flow into our data platform.
We need your help to build, improve and maintain Netsuite Workflows, Google Sheets, and other internal tools as part of our data infrastructure. At present, we use Netsuite as our ERP and Sheets for analysis, some reporting, and some data input. Integrations with BigQuery (to BigQuery via federated sheets, from BigQuery via data connections) and other systems (via Google PubSub + AppsScript) are used side-by-side with Sheets programming to provide self-service to people throughout the business. Together, we will expand our use of Netsuite workflows, regularize our Sheets use, provide assistance to non-technical users, and make our internal tools more powerful and robust. Then test, and keep improving. In areas where our tools are already fully functional, you'll lend your abilities to provide analyses, improve internal processes, automate systems, and optimise, well, everything. And down the track, we'd love you to get involved with some Bayesian analysis, machine learning and other interesting data-related projects.
If you get excited by the idea of exposing insight by beautifying spreadsheet structure and functionality to inform great decisions; and you want those insights based on accessible, understandable and trustworthy data, then this could be the job for you. If you bring your experience, smarts and detail-oriented brain to help us, we'll offer a world-class team to learn from, the tools you need to do your thing, and the support you need to flourish.
**IF YOU WERE HERE IN THE FEW LAST WEEKS YOU MIGHT HAVE**:
- Built complex, robust and user-friendly spreadsheet models with large volumes of data extracted from BigQuery to streamline business critical processes and track key indicators.
- Used SQL to extract, manipulate and join data in BigQuery or Postgres, and worked with the Data Engineer to push the missing data into BigQuery
- Chased a handful of data validation alerts raised by our pipelines, and taken the time to get to the root cause of each of them, then either delegated the fix to an appropriate someone else or fixed them yourself
- Worked outside of data team, with our supply planners, flexing your analytical and query optimisation skills to decide whether to fix a performance issue they're having at the data level, or insist that the fix should be in the process
- Provided an ad-hoc analysis (working with our analysts) to someone who requested it, integrating a one-off data source
- Talked with our CDO about some of our mid-term plans, and how we'll support them with data
- Defined a data interface for allowing people in other teams to validate and import data to our data platform via AppsScript, Google PubSub, Google Cloud Function, and Apache NiFi. You would have worked with one of our data engineers on this and consulted with the end users.
**THESE ARE SOME QUALITIES YOU MUST POSSESS**
- At least two years experience or education in data-related roles or equivalent (significant contribution to an open-source project, academic work, volunteer work, etc.)
- Basic working knowledge of SQL and either experience in programming Sheets using AppsScript or experience in programming ECMASCript (JavaScript, TypeScript, etc.)
- Experience with spreadsheets (pivot tables, lookups, cross-sheet usage, data validation, modeling, advanced formulas)
- Strong analytical skills and an ability to perform root cause analysis
- Training in at least one of Business Analysis, Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another relevant quantitative or business field (or demonstrable skill in one of those areas and the story of how you built that skill without formal training)
- Very high precision - you need to know how to verify that your work is correct (even when dealing with unreliable data, where uncertainty may be inherent)
- Bonus points for more ECMAScript programming experience, such as Netsuite's SuiteScript, and with project management and machine learning.
