Location: Melbourne | CBD
Job type: Full time
Organisation: Department of Transport and Planning
**Salary**: $91,418 - $103,725
Occupation: Regulatory Governance and Compliance
Reference: 1700
**About the Role**
Working within a collaborative and knowledgeable team, your role will be to assist project teams to understand and comply with their cultural heritage obligations. Reporting to the Manager, Heritage Practice, you'll build and maintain strong relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and authorities. Long term you will enjoy multiple avenues for learning and development; from your immediate team and organically as a result of external relationships you build.
The Heritage Advisor provides critical heritage advice across the Department’s transport functions. This includes:
Providing agile, expert, and practical heritage support across the transport portfolio, helping others to achieve legislative compliance in both strategic and operational contexts.
Building and maintaining strong working relationships with Registered Aboriginal Parties, Traditional Owner Corporations, transport colleagues, heritage regulators and statutory authorities within the context of both Aboriginal and historical heritage management.

**Position Outcomes / Accountabilities**
- Assist project teams to understand their cultural heritage obligations (Aboriginal and historic), obtain statutory approvals and achieve compliance with key legislation, particularly the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic) and Heritage Act 2017 (Vic).
- Exercise professional independent judgement when advising on the development, delivery, monitoring and review of Cultural Heritage Management Plans, and other heritage consents and approvals (Aboriginal and historic).
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with Registered Aboriginal Parties, Traditional Owner Corporations, transport colleagues, heritage regulators and statutory organisations within the context of both Aboriginal and historic heritage.
- Assist project teams to understand and comply with obligations under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic) and Native Title Act 1993 (Clth) (with support from the Manager Heritage Practice and Senior Heritage Advisor).
- Provide sound written and verbal advice to key internal and external stakeholders on heritage management issues (both Aboriginal and historical) that may impact on planning and delivery of projects and programs, and advocate for cultural heritage management outcomes in the context of necessary road safety standards, environmental standards and engineering constraints.
- Effectively coach, teach or mentor less experienced staff and encourage improved heritage compliance on an ongoing basis.
- Contribute to the development, delivery and implementation of strategic heritage management initiatives that encourage improved operational efficiency and effectiveness.
Additionally, you will excel in project delivery, adept at defining tasks to meet agreed-upon outcomes and guiding others in their execution. You should also exhibit critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, considering the broader business context and identifying recurring issues to prevent their recurrence by integrating solutions into work processes.
On a personal level, you will have a demonstrated capacity for flexibility and adaptability, adeptly fine-tuning your approach to align with evolving priorities. Your openness to acquiring and honing new skills and knowledge allows you to seamlessly embrace novel working methods and efficiently structure your tasks to achieve desired outcomes, all while accepting shifts in priorities without undue discomfort and responding swiftly to changing circumstances.
Furthermore, your accomplished resilience becomes evident as you consistently maintain a positive attitude and deliver work of the highest quality, even when faced with the most challenging situations. Under pressure, you possess the remarkable ability to keep both yourself and your colleagues composed, making decisive decisions and plotting courses of action that empower teams to effectively address and surmount intricate challenges.
