**Join our team as a Compliance Officer and help protect and enhance the Byron Shire community.** In this role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring compliance with planning, environmental and public safety legislation, while delivering exceptional customer service. You’ll investigate complaints, provide expert advice, prepare enforcement cases, and work closely with the community, Councillors, and external agencies.
We’re looking for someone with sound knowledge of law enforcement principles, strong communication and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to manage complex situations with professionalism and fairness. These roles are dual graded - which means they are graded depending on your skills and experience which gives you the ability to develop and grow over time.
**Your knowledge and experience will include**:
- Demonstrated aptitude or interest in this field of work (Grade 4).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of law enforcement including the rules of evidence, procedural fairness and officer discretion with extensive experience dealing with the public, environmental issues, conflict resolution and difficult situations and issues (Grade 6).
- Desirable - considerable experience in a front line regulatory and enforcement role, with extensive experience dealing with the public, conflict resolution and difficult situations and issues (Grade 7/9).
Knowledge
- Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and requirements or willingness to acquire such knowledge (Trainee).
- A sound knowledge and understanding of the legislative framework of Regulatory Services (Grade 4/6/7/9).
**To be successful in this role you will have**:
- The flexibility to be available to work rotating shifts over a 24 hour period and over seven days of the week if rostered. We require your availability to work weekends and public holidays.
**Grade 4**
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of law enforcement including the rules of evidence, procedural fairness and officer discretion with extensive experience dealing with the public, environmental issues, conflict resolution and difficult situations and issues.
- A sound knowledge and understanding of the legislative framework of Regulatory Services.
- Demonstrated well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to provide excellent customer service and deliver quality service outcomes as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrated well-developed organisation skills and ability to plan and prioritise multiple projects while consistently meeting agreed timeframes.
- Demonstrated commitment to Work Health Safety, Equal Employment Opportunity and Cultural Diversity principles.
- Demonstrated computer literacy, with experience in the MS Office suite of software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher and PowerPoint)
- SEINS (Self Enforcing Infringement Notices System) qualification or ability to obtain.
- Demonstrated experience and qualifications, or ability to obtain, as an authorised Officer under Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997
**Grade 6 - The above and below**
- A certificate or post-certificate-level qualifications in development assessment, environmental studies, building surveying or a related discipline.
- Knowledge and demonstrated knowledge of the relevant legislative framework relevant to planning, the environment, public order and safety.
**Grade 7 - The above and below**
- An advanced certificate, associate diploma, appropriate in-house training or equivalent combined with extensive experience in development assessment, environmental studies, building surveying or a related discipline.
- Good working knowledge of all legislation relevant to the position.
- 3+ years’ experience as a Ranger or Compliance Officer.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare briefs of evidence.
