Funds in Court (FIC) is a self-funded division of the Supreme Court of Victoria, managing funds paid into Court, primarily for people under a legal disability. All funds are held, invested and administered by the Associate Judge of the Court who is the Senior Master. FIC provides support and services for over 7,000 persons under ‘legal disability' (beneficiaries).
The Legal Services Section of FIC provides advice and support services to the Senior Master, the Judicial Registrar and Office staff concerning the administration of funds for persons under disability.
The Legal Officer is a member of the Legal Services Team and provides legal advice to the Senior Master and Judicial Officers in respect of the administration of funds in Court. This advice will include issues pertaining to real property including domestic building contracts and permits (planning and building).
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Provide advice and recommendations to the Senior Master and Judicial Registrar regarding a wide variety of legal matters affecting beneficiaries and their families and carers, including trust, human rights, disability, family, property, and criminal law
- Verify compliance with orders of the Court, the Rules of Court and relevant legislation, and authorise payments into and out of Court in accordance with these
- Make recommendations in difficult cases involving conflicting interests and parties within a high volume and challenging work environment, and provide advice as required
- Maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders and relevant agencies.
About you
- Admission to practise as an Australian Lawyer in the Supreme Court of Victoria is essential
- Knowledge of trust, human rights, disability, property, and criminal law is highly desirable
- Experience in the disability sector, trustee industry and personal injury proceedings will be highly regarded
- Commitment to the interest of people with a disability and willingness to operate in a manner that is consistent with FIC's code of conduct, inspiring trust by treating all individuals fairly
- Ability to work within a team environment and support other FIC staff in the pursuit of optimal outcomes for beneficiaries
- High level organisational skills - ability to prioritise work requirements
- Well-developed attention to detail
- Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to support decision making and recommendations.
