**Position Information**:
Waratah West Public School, located 10km from the Newcastle city centre, has a small, diverse population of 100 students and a strong collaborative partnership between school and community. The school has five mainstream classes and three support classes (two Multi Categorical; one Behaviour Disorder). The school draws students from a broad spectrum of the community. 50% of students come from the lowest 25% of the socio-economic community and 30% of students are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
Waratah West Public School places a strong emphasis on quality teaching in literacy and numeracy and developing the whole student through collaborative teaching practices that develop the academic, social and emotional wellbeing of all students. The school has high expectations for every student and a commitment to engendering a genuine love of learning through innovative and challenging educational programs and pedagogies. Waratah West Public School receives equity funding to support students from Aboriginal backgrounds and for students from low socio-economic communities. The school focus on play based learning in the early years and learning in the outdoor environment K-6 results in improved engagement and wellbeing for every student. The school utilises Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and Zones of Regulation to support learning. The school has strong connections with University of Newcastle and is actively involved with Speech Pathology in Schools (SPinS), Children’s University and a range of other programs that support positive academic and social outcomes. Students in Waratah West Public School support classes enjoy programs that promote strong integration and inclusion with the mainstream cohort.
**Selection Criteria**:
In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach infants and/or primary
1. Approval to teach special education and experience leading the improvement of learning and wellbeing outcomes for students with diverse emotional and behavioural support needs, K-6.
2. Expert leadership skills with the demonstrated capacity to lead a support unit in line with current DoE policies to develop and implement high quality differentiated curriculum.
3. Evidence of a highly visible, approachable, and collaborative leader with the capacity to build and maintain positive, inclusive, trusting relationships and partnerships with all stakeholders.
4. Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and students from low socio-economic status communities.
**General Selection Criteria**:
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
- 2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs- 3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams- 4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents- 5.
