**Who we are**
The Biosecurity Analytics Centre (BAC) is a centre of excellence for data and analytics. We provide a range of services for the department, delivering advanced analytics products and cleansed high-quality data available for use by both internal and external teams. We develop products that transform raw data into information and usable intelligence, improving risk identification, management and decision-making capabilities.

**The Jobs**
The Assistant Technical Director is part of a leadership cohort which manages the Data Science and Engineering Team. Technically, this includes the ability to translate complex business problems into data problems and provide quality assurance and feedback on data products. Managerially, this involves engaging with stakeholders, mentoring team members as required and assuring product quality through peer review. Ideally, the successful applicant will have a high level of technical excellence, be self-driven and work well with others to deliver data and analytic products.

As an Assistant Technical Director, you will:

- work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver data and analytic products that are fit for business use
- enjoy problem solving and identifying options to resolve technical and business issues
- lead and deliver key data and analytics objectives within agreed timeframes and with mínimal supervision
- manage staff performance and the quality of their business intelligence and artificial intelligence solutions
- ensure established quality assurance processes, continuous integration processes and documentation and programming conventions are followed
- contribute to continuous development through peer-learning and peer-coaching
- provide quality advice to the director on team management and strategic direction
- ensure compliance with legislation, policies and standards, including the APS Values and Code of Conduct, department's health and safety policies, procedures and departmental instructional material.

**Please note** that this recruitment process will be used to fill 2 current vacancies in the Data Science and Engineering Team. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of 18 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**
Essential
- Demonstrated experience reviewing code and enforcing quality patterns.

Desirable
- Experience managing technical teams, preferably within a public sector environment.
- Azure DevOps for managing code and for continuous integration.
- Data engineering experience, particularly SQL and/or Power BI.
- Data science experience, particularly in R, Python or Spark.
- An understanding of Australia’s biosecurity or export systems.

**Mandatory qualifications**
Relevant tertiary qualifications (in mathematics, computer science or science) or comparable industry experience.
