**About us**

We are a dynamic, hard-working team supporting the work of the Legislative Council - the Upper House of the NSW Parliament. The Upper House is a 'House of Review', and acts as a check and balance on the Executive Government. The Department of the Legislative Council supports the activities of the House, including its sittings, committee inquiries, protocol and corporate responsibilities. It also undertakes communication and engagement activities to inform and educate the community, as well as key internal and external stakeholders.

The Department has three parts: the Procedure Office, the Corporate and Bicentenary (Black Rod) Office, and the Committee Office.

Department staff strive to provide exceptional services to our key stakeholders, which range from the President of the Legislative Council to members of the public. Staff also work in collaboration with the Department of the Legislative Assembly and the Department of Parliamentary Services to ensure the effective running of the Parliament.

**About the position**

We are seeking a highly motivated and suitably experienced Principal Communications Officer to join the Corporate and Bicentenary (Black Rod) Office.

In this position you will be responsible for end-to-end delivery of social and digital media for the Department. In practice, this means creating and driving engagement with content that spans everything from the sittings of the House and the work of parliamentary committees, through to protocol events and delegations, exhibitions and special projects.

In addition to the day-to-day running of social media, the Principal Communications Officer is also tasked with preparing written materials including media releases; developing and implementing communication plans; building and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships; and training staff in effective digital communication.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline are desirable but not essential. You should be able to demonstrate relevant professional experience in communications, digital engagement or a similar field. As content creation is central to this role, you will need to be familiar with content creation tools for written, graphic and audiovisual content, and well-versed in social and digital media platforms.

Please note: The Principal Communications Officer role is just one type of Principal Council Officer position within the Department. When reviewing the full Position Description document linked below, make sure to scroll to the relevant section.
