Then you could be the perfect Aboriginal Court Liaison Officer to join the professionals at Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network. Firstly, applicants must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. An applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14 of the Antidiscrimination Act 1977 NSW. Aboriginal applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the selection criteria below. We’re looking for an Aboriginal Court Liaison officer who holds or working towards obtaining a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Diploma in Counselling, Djirruwang program or relevant health related qualification and combination of experience.

Here at Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network, The Aboriginal Court Liaison Officer is an integral member within the Statewide Community and Court Liaison Service (SCCLS). The SCCLS aims to assist the court magistrates with the diversion of mentally ill, disordered and/or cognitively impaired individuals from the courts into the community for treatment.
The role of the Aboriginal Court Liaison Officer is to assist with the diversion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait People by additionally assessing unmet needs and risks, linking them with culturally appropriate care, and providing follow up support to improve their likelihood of being successfully diverted to community based mental health care. As an Aboriginal identified position, the role also involves the provision of education, cultural expertise, advice and input into the care, management and diversion of Aboriginal clients that are accessing SCCLS. It aims to ensure the SCCLS deliver culturally appropriate and sensitive mental health care to Aboriginal clients. The position will work in collaboration with all SCCLS clinicians and Psychiatrists to achieve the best diversion outcomes for Aboriginal clients.

- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination Act).
- Hold or working towards obtaining a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Diploma in Counselling, Djirruwang program or relevant health related qualification and combination of experience
- A demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal concepts of social and emotional wellbeing including an understanding of Aboriginal family structure and Aboriginal culture and wisdom. This will include an understanding regarding the practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal individuals with mental health concerns and their families.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a range of key stakeholders including clients, carers, families, elders, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, communities, Local Health Districts, government and non-government organisations including courts
- Knowledge and/or demonstrated skills in mental health care and/or case management and ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary mental health team, while working within the scope of one’s own role.
- Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication, including negotiation and problem solving skills, as well as computer skills (MS Office).
