The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), an Australian Government agency, has an ongoing Assistant Director, Executive Level 1 opportunity within the Grants Management Unit (GMU) in our Parramatta Office, NSW. This recruitment process will also create a merit pool for similar future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies in our Dubbo, Coffs Harbour and Parramatta Office locations.
The GMU manages grant agreements with First Nations and mainstream service providers to deliver a wide range of support services and activities to First Nations peoples across Australia. The Australian Government grant funding is critical to ‘closing the gap’ between First Nation Australians and the wider community. This role undertakes and supervises a team to draft agreements, negotiate and execute grant agreements, monitor compliance and performance, manage risk, make payments, analyse financial reports and acquit funding.
The Assistant Director role has people, program and stakeholder management responsibilities. You will be expected to manage employees and take responsibility for their overall performance. The role nurtures and manages a range of key internal and external stakeholder relationships and networks.
The Assistant Director is a key leadership position within the GMU. The position has delegated authority and responsibility to resolve issues and risks across wide ranging grant activities. The role also has responsibility for exercising Financial Delegations to manage grants. We are looking for someone who can use a range of systems and programs, be analytical and strategic, possess self-awareness and have a track record of leading a team.
- ability to manage a geographically dispersed team and ensure grant agreement management and administration activities comply with relevant legislation, guidance materials and policy frameworks
- ability to provide expert grant agreement management and administration advice to staff and internal stakeholders across varying levels of complexity, sensitivity and risks
- demonstrated high-level analytical, research and problem-solving skills
- ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders regarding the management of grant agreements (e.g: service delivery and provider capability risks, performance reports, grant payment instalments
- ability to provide strategic and technical advice to guide risk assessment and integrity across grant agreements
- ability to identify emerging opportunities or issues and respond quickly to competing priorities as they emerge
- demonstrated flexibility and good judgement
- demonstrated proactive leadership across all APS levels to provide staff with tools and manage expectations to deliver high quality, client focused outcomes
- willingness and commitment to develop the cultural competency of staff about the diverse cultural backgrounds of all Australians and of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and peoples
- ability to effectively supervise staff and constructively manage staff with a focus on capability development, team building and talent management.
