SYNOPSIS:
The Treasury have Assistant Director opportunities in the International Economics and Security Division within the National Security Team and East Asia and India Unit.

The National Security Team provides advice on national security and defence policy. We analyse and advise on security and capability policy development, work with other agencies as policies are developed and monitor current and emerging policy issues. A central part of our work is advising on proposals led by Defence, Home Affairs and other parts of the National Intelligence Community.

Our advice influences decision making at the highest level of the Australian Government through our briefing support to Cabinet committees and relevant senior officials committees. Our work aims to ensure the Government is presented with well-informed solutions in national security policy, defence and strategic policy, capability acquisition and sustainment, cyber, border security and other matters in the national security and defence sphere. We also have a central role in the Commonwealth Budget process.

The East Asia and India Unit provides advice on Australia’s bilateral economic relationships with key partners across East Asia and India, including China. A central element of the team’s work involves advising on relevant proposals led by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as well as leading briefings and coordination of ministerial and executive engagement in support of Treasury’s and Australia’s international economic ties. Our work ensures the Treasurer is well-informed in international bilateral engagements, and well-positioned to advocate for Australia’s economic interests. To do this, East Asia and India Unit applies a strong knowledge of macro and microeconomics to understand our partners’ core economic considerations and inform policy analysis.
- Experience in policy advice to Government, especially in roles that require critical analysis in a fast-paced environment
- Advanced stakeholder engagement skills to support relationships across Government, inside the department, with Australian representatives at diplomatic posts and with Ministerial Offices
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to identify the areas Treasury seeks to influence, and provide a policy view or recommendation
- Strong strategic thinking skills to identify and influence stakeholders on priority issues aligned to Australia’s broad national interest
- Initiative and flexibility to respond to changing organisational needs and priorities
- Superior leadership and teamwork skills to contribute to a high-performing team to produce timely and high-quality advice and outcomes

**Qualifications / Experience**:
Assistant Directors will have well developed leadership skills and will be expected to manage junior staff members. Given the small size of the team and tight deadlines, there will be a mix of oversighting work by junior staff, and hands-on production of work.

A background in economics is desirable.
