About the Program
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Program creates an opportunity for participants to reach their full potential via supported on the job training in Metro South Health and Childrens Health Queensland with localised education and meaningful employment.
The program has been named, in commemoration of, and with current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners, and with honour will be called 'The Ume Koola Program'. This language name translates to 'Our Rock Our Power'.
Queensland Health has partnered with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) 5285 to deliver the vocational qualifications associated with the program. Participants are supported with full time employment, tailored education plans to suit individual learning needs, suitable rostering to support engagement with program education and wrap around, culturally safe support to continue through the program's various academic milestones. Program participants will be expected to engage with study outside of rostered hours.
About the role
Metro South Health and Childrens Health Queensland is committed to growing the First Nations health workforce and values the role and contribution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.
The Trainee Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner (Identified) will, under supervision, provide support and assistance to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander consumers, delivering flexible, accessible, and holistic care that incorporates a multidisciplinary, collaborative care planning approach to meet individual consumer, family, and community needs.
The trainee will be required to actively participate in 'on the job training' requirements to successfully complete nationally recognised qualifications associated with the program. This is an exciting opportunity to gain exposure across a number of clinical environments across Metro South Health and Childrens Health Queensland.

To perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.
- An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who:

- Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and either
- Is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent; or
- Is accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.
