**About the organisation**
The purpose of the Panel is to provide independent expert advice to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW/the Department) on urban water management issues to support the achievement of outcomes sought by water strategies and understand emerging risks and challenges.
The Panel will be asked to provide advice on urban water issues that are of relevance to the implementation of the NSW Water Strategy, Greater Sydney Water Strategy, Lower Hunter water Security Plan and Regional Water Strategies.
Panel members will use their broad understanding of urban water management issues and expertise to strengthen the Department’s work to support water strategy implementation.
**The position**
The NSW Department Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is seeking Expressions of Interest from suitable people to be considered for appointment as a member (1 role) of the Independent Water Advisory Panel.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of urban water planning to advise on implementation of key priorities in the NSW Water Strategy, the Greater Sydney Water Strategy, the Lower Hunter water Security Plan and Regional Water Strategies. The Board has a key role in shaping the long-term strategic framework for water management to improve the security, reliability and quality of the state’s water resources.
The Department is expanding the advisory functions of the panel to cover regional water management issues.
All Board members will be responsible for providing strategic direction to ensure the organisation is effective and achieves its purpose of supporting the NSW Department Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Water Group.
The initial term of the Board will be for two years.
**About you**
We welcome nominations from people who have the capabilities, experience and expertise to provide strategic and technical advice to government urban water management issues facing regional cities and towns.
Members of the IWAP must be able to participate in approximately four full-day meetings per year and undertake adequate preparation in advance of meetings.
Applicants must demonstrate academic qualifications and/or extensive experience in one or more of the following fields:
- regional water conservation and demand management
- regional urban water planning and integrated water cycle management
- regional water infrastructure
- environmental issues associated with regional urban water planning (environmental flows, waterway health, etc.)
- climate science
- land use/city planning and liveability
- Aboriginal values of water
- groundwater ecosystems and management
- economics of urban water systems.
We expect panel members to have:
- comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the regional water sector
- academic qualifications and/or extensive experience in any of the relevant fields
- demonstrated ability to provide strategic and technical advice to government
- highly developed strategic thinking, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills
- ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, and with different stakeholders across government and the community
- experience in resolving complex technical and policy challenges
- demonstrated high ethical and professional standards.

**Remuneration**
The Board has been classified under the NSW Public Service Commission’s Classification and Remuneration Framework for NSW Government Boards with annual remuneration of $10,000.
