About the Opportunity
The Counsellor attached to the SWSLHD Aboriginal Drug Health Team will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide culturally responsive care navigation and psychological interventions to Aboriginal clients and their families who are dealing with issues related to substance use. The Counsellor will work in partnership with Aboriginal Health Workers to ensure therapeutic interventions have a strong cultural framework that is responsive to the specific needs of Aboriginal consumers and their families.

What You'll be Doing
The Counsellor will provide individual and group-work interventions in a range of settings that reduce drug related harm and provide a high standard of culturally responsive, clinical care in line with SWSLHD policies and procedures, standards, relevant legislation, and the NSW Health Code of Conduct. The position will also participate in professional development, cultural supervision, clinical supervision, teaching, quality activities and other relevant departmental and administrative duties.

- Tertiary qualification as a Registered Counsellor, which provides eligibility for membership with a professional organisation and or current registration with AHPRA where applicable.
- Demonstrated understanding of the causative factors related to drug and alcohol misuse within Aboriginal communities.
- Demonstrated clinical skills in assessment, case management and counselling within a drug and alcohol service
- Knowledge of the harm reduction approach to drug and alcohol issues and demonstrated experience in the provision of culturally responsive interventions with Aboriginal drug dependent clients
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team and an understanding of the role of Aboriginal Health Workers
- High level of communication skills, including the development of person centered care plans and facilitating clinical consultation with other health professionals
- Demonstrated experience in being able to provide culturally responsive therapeutic interventions for clients within a counselling service
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to implement quality improvement processes
- Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
