
Mental Health Practitioner

As a Mental Health Practitioner, you will provide intensive, trauma-informed and culturally appropriate brief intervention support services through risk assessment, crisis counselling, safety planning, assessment of mental health needs, advocacy and referrals to community and government agencies within your network. You will maintain and develop referral pathways and increase support options for clients. You will also have the opportunity to work on projects, develop and deliver training packages, and support policy development in Legal Aid Queensland. The role also offers the further opportunity to conduct family dispute resolution conferences and clinical and forensic assessments of families and children for use in family law and child protection proceedings if you are appropriately qualitied.
In this role you will
- Provide high-quality and trauma-informed mental health support to persons who experience or use domestic and family violence to prevent domestic and family violence experiences, including risk assessment, crisis counselling, safety planning, identification of mental health support needs, assisting clients to engage with court processes safely, and advice about external support services.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external domestic and family violence support workers, lawyers and litigation support officers to best support clients enhance their safety.
- Maintain networks with stakeholders and represent Legal Aid Queensland in external forums about family law and related matters as required.
- Develop and provide training and continuing legal information/education to Legal Aid Queensland staff, preferred suppliers, external practitioners and stakeholders about family law matters as required.
- Contribute to Legal Aid Queensland's policy development submissions.
- If a member of LAQ's Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner panel, act as a mediator and chair family dispute resolution conferences in parenting and associated matters.
- Is suitability experienced, prepare complex assessment reports for use in the family law and child protection jurisdictions.
- Comply with time recording and other reporting requirements.
- Maintain a high standard of practice through governance and risk management.
