**The role**
We are looking for multiple Vector Surveillance Officers in Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. These are Temporary Full-Time positions for 12 months with the possibility of extension.
These positions will be supervised by and work in close collaboration with the local or designated Regional Vector Coordinator (RVC); to deliver or assist with the following duties, within their region (designated area)
- Conduct routine vector monitoring activities appropriate to port risk assessments, including placement, installation, maintenance and servicing of all trap types operated by the department.
- Gain and use knowledge of mosquito biology to guide effective delivery of vector monitoring activities including the optimum methods for sampling, placing traps and knowing when and where to sample mosquitoes.
- Conduct regular surveillance activities at first points of entry and high risk Approved Arrangement (AA) sites, including formal ground surveys.
- Prepare, maintain, and annually update a consolidated Vector ‘toolbox’ for each port.
- As required, manage specimens collected by the vector program.
- Conduct activities required under national Response Guidelines for detections of exotic mosquitoes.
- contribute to an annual review of vector regional monitoring review arrangements to
- contribute to non-routine, operational vector monitoring and management activities, such as undertaking inspections of conveyances or high-risk goods.
- Maintain regular communication with their RVC and as required, seek and follow advice to deliver vector monitoring tasks to the required standard of the work instructions.
- Maintain cooperation with external stakeholders associated with the vector monitoring program.
- Tertiary qualification in the area of biological science, environmental science or agriculture.
- Experience with conducting field-based surveillance for insects, **ideally mosquitoes**, including establishing, maintaining and checking a network of traps.
- Experience with working in a laboratory, including rearing insects, and preparing insect specimens and using light microscopy for their identification.
- Good recording skills and the ability to enter data in central database.
- Will be required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at this level.
- Must be **an Australian citizen.**:
