Our mandate is to seek social justice, alleviate social inequality and enable better healthcare for people seeking asylum and people experiencing disadvantage within Australia and overseas.
The Asylum Seeker Health Program is based at the Cabrini Asylum Seeker and Refugee Health Hub in Brunswick. Our primary target groups are people seeking asylum who are Medicare-ineligible and those who have Medicare but limited or no income. Our service provides integrated primary care, mental health care and health waiver programs, and is a recognised leader in the work we do winning the Victorian Multicultural Commission Awards for Excellence in Health in 2021.
The Specialist Mental Health Service is a multidisciplinary team with psychiatry (employed and pro bono), clinical psychology and mental health clinicians, supported by a Clinical Lead and Clinical Director. The team works closely in an integrated model with the Primary Health Care team and other external community-based organisations supporting people seeking asylum.
The Role
The Team Leader - Mental Health is a key member of Cabrini Outreach’s Asylum Seeker Health Services responsible for the supervision and leadership of the mental health clinicians and psychologists in the specialist mental health service, psychosocial support workers in our regional projects, as well holding a clinical position as a mental health clinician.
This role is a permanent part-time role at 30.4 hours per week.
Key responsibilities- Overseeing the day to day management of the specialist mental health service and supervision and leadership of direct reports- Contribution to data collection and reporting, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, participating in supervision and management meetings and sector engagement.- Direct clinical care of clients through triage, assessment, therapeutic intervention, care coordination, report writing as well as facilitating internal and external referrals to other health and community services.
About you
We are seeking a Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Allied Health professional (Psychologist, Social Worker or Occupational Therapist) with at least five years clinical experience in mental health who has been a team leader or held another senior or management roles or is capable of taking the next step in their career.
You must also be passionate about working with people seeking asylum in a community-based setting.
You will have:
- Registered Nurse registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); who has completed either a specialist undergraduate psychiatric nursing program or a specialist post basic course of training which led to registration as a Division 3 nurse; OR- Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Applied Science (Social Work) or a Master of Social Work; hold current registration or eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW); OR- Hold an approved qualification in Occupational Therapy and be registered with AHPRA; OR- Registration as a Psychologist with AHPRA and eligible for membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS)- AND Post-entry/post graduate qualification in mental health (preferable).- Previous experience working with asylum seekers and refugees (highly desirable).- Ability to provide and be responsible for supervision and leadership of the specialist mental health team, including the ability to delegate and to motivate the team.- Ability to work autonomously under limited supervision, exercising sound professional judgement and seeking advice and consultation when appropriate.- Experience in undertaking triage, assessments, developing plans, providing sound trauma-informed therapeutic care and complex care coordination.
