The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking a qualified and experienced Assistant Registrar Collection Access to join our Collections and Access team in this ongoing APS 4 position.

The Assistant Registrar Collections and Access works within the Collections and Access team to preserve and share the Museums National Maritime Collection (NMC) and other historic material in the museum’s care. This role will contribute to the documentation, safe storage, movement, and handling of the NMC, the administration of the collection database, and the digitisation of the collection. This position will organise the loan and shipment of historic objects in the Museums collection and care, participate in the installation and demount of collection objects and loans for exhibitions, and assist with other outreach programs.
**High level overview of accountabilities**:
- Assisting in the development and implementation of procedures for collection access and management including accessioning, digitisation, storage, handling, inventory, loan and documentation standards of the NMC and other historic material in the museums care.
- Under limited supervision and in accordance with museum policies and procedures and industry best practice initiating and undertaking collection management programs including accessioning, storage, handling, inventory of historic materials in the museums care.
- Monitoring the quality of collection management and loan data and records and ensuring they are accurate and of a high standard to aid access, control, accountability and minimise risk of damage or loss. Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, permits and protocols and adjusting processes as necessary.
- Assisting with object, handling, documentation, shipment, and loans and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to assist in the planning and implementation of museum exhibitions.
- Responding to public enquiries and assisting with exhibition and outreach programs.
- Undertaking research and analysis of developments and innovations in museum collection management, digitisation and loans policy and procedures and implement system improvement initiatives.
- Supervising volunteers and collaborate with the team to meet Museum objectives and priorities with regards to collection access, digitisation and data clean-up program.
**Selection Criteria**:
**Essential**
- Bachelor degree or equivalent qualifications in Museum Studies or a related experience and /or training field.
- Excellent understanding of the role and functions of the Collection and Access or Registration teams in a major museum.
- Demonstrated knowledge of documentation required for inbound and outbound loans of collection objects and a knowledge of loan management and object handling procedures.
- Demonstrated organisational skills showing initiative and good work management skills, including self-discipline, motivation, and the ability to prioritise and manage time to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
- Experience in museum object handling, movement, packing or in organising museum object freight for loans and exhibitions.
- Experience in supporting exhibition registration deliverables and on exhibition installation teams in the delivery of self-generated and inbound exhibition projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the capacity to work in small teams and the ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Well-developed organisation skills and a demonstrated ability to achieve results within defined timeframes and budget.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practice WHS processes and documentation, including the creation of Risk Assessments and Safe Work Method Statements.
**Desirable**
- Knowledge and skills in TMS Collection Management System.
- NSW driver’s licence.
- Forklift licence.
