- At Brunswick South-West Primary School our purpose is to deliver education where students reach their potential physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and creatively. We believe our curriculum should be child centred and inquiry based, and this broad, developmentally-appropriate curriculum. We are deeply committed to state education and firmly believe in a state school¿s capacity to deliver first-rate educational outcomes. The school is affiliated with Waratah Special Development School which has a Satellite Unit within the school. These students are integrated in a variety of activities across all year levels.
- The school has approximately 450 students from diverse cultures and backgrounds; the overall socio-economic profile is high; similarly, the proportion of students with English as a second language is high. The atmosphere is calm and friendly.
- Strong literacy and numeracy curricula underpin all our programs; information technologies are imbedded in the curriculum. Our openness to new ideas and educational research initiatives ensures that our curriculum stays rigorous and lively and that our students are challenged and encouraged to extend themselves.
- High quality specialist programs are Chinese, Library, Physical Education, Visual and Performing Arts. Complementary programs include Reading Recovery, Student Representative Council, interschool sport, Bike Ed, Intensive Swimming Program, Family Life, chess, gardening and camps. A comprehensive After School Performing Arts Program delivers music lessons in a range of instruments and circus/drama classes. Out of school hour care and holiday programs operate on site.
- The staff is a cohesive team, particularly in the areas of curriculum planning and development with delivery through team teaching. Distinctive educational programs based on student learning needs, promote diversity, inclusiveness and cooperation and have a positive influence on the school¿s character. Teachers reflect the school's commitment to delivering excellent educational outcomes by providing valuable lunch time activities, such as clubs, choirs and sport training.
- Parents are valued contributors to the school program and play a significant role in making Brunswick South-West Primary School a vibrant, stimulating and friendly place. They support the school enthusiastically in classroom activities and organise fundraising and enjoyable social and cultural events. The school's Art Show and Fete reflect the rich partnership of this community working together.
- We value our positive relationship with the local community and encourage the responsible use of our facilities outside school hours. We in turn are regular users of local libraries, galleries, sporting facilities and other schools. Strong links have been forged with Brunswick Secondary College, where students participate in a wide range of activities.
- Our facilities include: the original 1927 refurbished three-storey building; an astutely designed 1970¿s grey brick complex; a large assembly/recreation hall with stage; a state-of-the-art library; designated art room and networked computers with interactive whiteboards throughout the school. A 1-to-1 Netbook program operates for students in years 3 to 6. The school's extensive, award-winning grounds include passive and active play areas, a vegetable garden and orchard, a large playing field, basketball, netball, tennis and volleyball courts, and two adventure playgrounds.
- The school aims to equip all pupils with the skills required to become resilient, resourceful leaders and contributors to society.
