Role Context

The Assistant Principal - Staff Development plays a central role in building teacher capacity across the College to improve student learning and wellbeing outcomes. Aligned with all three AP3 portfolios (Teaching & Learning, Engagement & Wellbeing, Transition & Operations), this role is integral in enhancing staff development systems and strategies that support the school's strategic improvement priorities. This Assistant Principal leads the development, implementation and review of the College's coaching and mentoring program, facilitates high-impact Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and coordinates the school's overarching Professional Learning Plan.

The role builds the capacity of staff to deliver high-quality instruction aligned with VTLM 2.0 and the College's instructional priorities. Through this work, the role supports Goal 1 and Goal 2 of the School Strategic Plan by ensuring staff are empowered, supported and developed to embed consistent, evidence-based practices that lead to improved academic outcomes and enhanced student engagement.

This role forms part of the Teaching & Learning team and works collaboratively with all other Assistant Principals and the Principal Team to deliver on key school priorities.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Professional Learning Communities (PLC)

  • Oversee and lead the implementation of PLCs across the College.
  • Ensure PLCs align with VTLM 2.0 and support instructional improvement.
  • Develop and monitor structures that empower staff to engage with data, reflect on practice and build collaborative cultures.
  • Support PLC leaders with facilitation strategies, templates and school-wide priorities.

Coaching and Mentoring

  • Design and lead a College-wide coaching and mentoring program that meets the needs of all staff.
  • Coordinate structures to support demonstration lessons, peer observations, and reflective practice.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Principals and Domain Leaders to align coaching foci with school-wide strategies.
  • Build capacity of Learning Specialists to engage in meaningful instructional conversations.

VIT and PTT Support

  • Coordinate the school's VIT induction and registration processes, including oversight of mentoring and support for provisionally registered teachers.
  • Support graduate teachers in developing and completing their Inquiry Cycle Portfolios in alignment with VIT expectations and school priorities.
  • Identify opportunities and coordinate appropriate structures for Permission to Teach (PTT) placements in collaboration with staff and external partners.

Professional Learning Plan

  • Develop a whole-school professional learning calendar aligned to the Annual Implementation Plan, VTLM 2.0, SSP goals and key focus areas (e.g., PCMS, MTSS, curriculum, careers education).
  • Work collaboratively with the Principal Team and Assistant Principals to determine College-wide professional learning needs.
  • Facilitate the planning and delivery of structured PL opportunities as part of the College meeting calendar.

Capacity Building

  • Provide leadership in developing a shared professional learning culture across the College.
  • Engage staff with current research, Department initiatives and high-impact instructional practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of professional learning on teacher practice and student outcomes.
  • Foster reflective and evidence-based practices to support continuous school improvement.

Program Oversight

The AP Staff Development has programmatic oversight of:

  • Coaching & Mentoring Program
  • Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
  • Professional Learning Calendar & Meeting Schedule

Team Leadership and Collaboration

The Assistant Principal - Staff Development leads and supports the following roles and teams:

  • Learning Specialists
  • PLC Leaders (where applicable)

This role collaborates with:

  • Principal Team
  • College Leadership

Other Duties

  • Participate in College Leadership Team meetings and initiatives.
  • Support college operations and college-wide decision making as required.
  • Perform other duties aligned with the scope and classification of Assistant Principal Range 1 as assigned by the Principal.

General Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the College Leadership Team.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the school's Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan.
  • Support the development of a culture of high expectations for students and staff.
  • Provide active leadership in the implementation of DET priorities and policies.

  • Uphold Child Safe Standards and commitment to student safety and wellbeing.
  • Participate in relevant professional learning and development aligned with role responsibilities and school goals.
  • Provide leadership and supervision as required during school events, meetings, and other duties as timetabled.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation aligned to role functions.
  • Attend and support scheduled information evenings, student conferences, awards nights, and other key college events.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Location Profile

Tarneit Senior College - `Integrity, Innovation & Focus'

Tarneit Senior College is located in a developing area of Wyndham, approximately 25 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. We are located next to one of our main feeder schools - Tarneit P-9 College while also accepting enrolments from a number of other primary and P-9 schools including Baden Powell College, Truganina P-9 College and Doherty's Creek P-9. Significant enrolment also comes from new families moving into Tarneit with Wyndham being one of the top growth corridors in Australia. The school is situated near a number of areas of significant urban development which will see continued enrolments over the next years of families moving into the area. In 2026 we expect to have approximately 850 students enrolled, and the projected enrolments is for the school to stabilise around this number in the next few years.

As a Senior College catering for Years 10, 11 & 12 we are able to offer comprehensive curriculum, pathways, and transition programs to cater for the academic and vocational needs of students.
