Brisbane, Australia Department of Veterans' Affairs Full time

Salary Range: $97,735 - $110,982 + Attractive Superannuation

The Veterans’ Review Board (VRB) is a specialist tribunal that delivers justice for veterans, current serving members and their families seeking to challenge decisions that affect their interests and, more broadly, we contribute to improving the quality of government decision-making.

For over 100 years, veterans have had a right to an external appeal to seek review of decisions relating to entitlements and assessment of war pensions. The VRB has existed in its current form since 1985.

We can only hear cases where the law gives us this authority and the law that establishes the VRB and governs our operation is the Veterans Entitlement Act 1986 (the VEA).

The types of decisions that we most commonly review relate to:

- Claims to accept liability or entitlement for a service injury, disease or death
- Applications for increase in disability pension
- Compensation for permanent impairment or incapacity for work
- Claims for war widow(er)’s or orphan’s pension

Staff at the VRB are organized into two groups: client services and tribunal services.

Client Services teams include:

- South Eastern (SE) Registry in Sydney;
- North West and South Australian (NWSA) Registry in Brisbane; and
- the Alternative Dispute Resolution team.

The Tribunal Support team includes member support, financial management and internal communications.

The Veterans’ Review Board is seeking a skilled NWSA Deputy Registrar to manage a key operational team within the Brisbane registry. The NWSA Deputy Registrar is an important part of the registry leadership structure and will work as part of a collaborative and supportive leadership group.

The NWSA Deputy Registrar will manage and support staff in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, provide high quality service to external users and internal stakeholders, including VRB members and conference registrars. The NWSA Deputy Registrar will utilise their expertise in VRB procedures and jurisdictions to manage complex matters and support staff in the Brisbane registry client service team.

**Duties**
- Assist the NWSA Registrar to manage the day-to-day operations of the Brisbane Registry to deliver an efficient, high quality, user-focused registry service
- Supervise staff to ensure registry standards are met and quality services are delivered to VRB users and VRB Members, including ensuring the quality of documentation for VRB members to conduct hearings and determine issues
- Implement procedures and train staff to ensure the delivery of local registry operations and quality services
- Provide high level procedural guidance to VRB users and staff in the Brisbane registry
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of VRB’s operational procedures and jurisdiction
- Provide ICT support and assistance to VRB members including running electronic hearings using teams and troubleshooting of common issues, in collaboration with the VRB’s Business Manager.

**Eligibility**
- Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
- All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.

**Notes**

Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role may be filled for a specified term of up to 23 months.

A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.

DVA is committed to improving the data skills and capability of our workforce to underpin our goal of becoming a leading data-driven organisation.
