The Director, Health, Safety and Environment
is responsible for driving a positive and
proactive culture for managing health, safety
and environmental risk at the University. This
includes leading and guiding the development
and implementation of the University’s vision,
strategy, culture, organisational arrangements,
systems, communications, and training and
education for health, safety and environmental
risk management.
The Director is a member of the University
Health, Safety & Environment Committee, and
will also work with the Director of Assurance,
Risk & Integrity Services (ARIS) in risk
assessments, audits and reviews. The Director
will need to have strong working relationships
with senior management of the University,
faculties, divisions, other stakeholders, and/or
industry partners, liaising with external
consultants as required, to ensure a strategic
approach to health, safety and environmental
risk management.
This position reports to the Executive Director,
Student Services and Wellbeing for
supervision, workload management and for
Performance Planning and Review (PPR).
**Key responsibilities include**:
- Lead communications and promote best
practice approaches in risk identification
and mitigation for health, safety and
environmental management.
- Provide leadership of the health, safety and
environment team including management of
human, financial and physical resources.
- Collaborate, network and coordinate with
senior management to improve the
awareness, capability and engagement at
all levels and sectors of the University for
the delivery of safe and healthy work
practices and environments.
- Provide strategic and operational advice to
the University’s executive and other senior
leaders.
- Lead the delivery and evaluation of a safety
leadership program for managers to
improve their health and safety capability
and capacity and embed a sustainable and
effective safety and risk management
culture across the University.
- Oversee the health, safety and environment
audit program, in collaboration with ARIS
and ensure the University’s safety
management systems are regularly
reviewed and changes implemented
appropriately.
- Oversee the performance of organisational
areas with respect to compliance with
health, safety and environmental legislation
and national standards.
- Participate in the reporting and investigation
of significant and high risk incidents, and
ensure the University’s incident
management and rectification plans are
reviewed and implemented.
- Maintain knowledge of national and state
policy and legislation and general trends
and performance in the University and
private sector.
- Oversee the management of WorkCover
claims, rehabilitation and wellbeing of staff
including mental health support.
- Compliance with health and safety policies,
procedures, hazard reporting and safe work
practices.
To ensure job flexibility the successful
appointee may be required to:
- perform any other duties as nominated by
the University consistent with the relevant
classification descriptors detailed in the
Enterprise Agreement. Staff undertaking
any new duties will receive training;
- participate in job rotation or multiskilling in
consultation with their supervisor;
- work across campuses.

This appointment will be offered on a fixed
- term, full-time basis for five (5) years.

Selection Criteria
1. Completion of a degree in science,
engineering or health sciences with
relevant postgraduate qualifications,
training and/or experience in health, safety
and environment and workers
compensation, together with experience in
a relevant senior leadership role.
2. Demonstrated strategic leadership of
health, safety and environment including
WorkCover claims and injury management
in a large and diverse organisation, with a
proven record of shaping an effective
strategic vision and coordinating its
implementation to deliver high
performance, compliance, and embedded
risk awareness and management.
3. Demonstrated high level interpersonal,
negotiation, and communication skills
including the ability to clearly
communicate, consult, negotiate, liaise
with and influence key stakeholders both
internal and external to the University.
4. Demonstrated team leadership and
management skills with a proven record in
the efficient and effective management of
human, financial and strategic resources
within a large and complex organisation.
5. Sound knowledge and demonstrated
workplace health and safety, wellbeing and
environmental protection principles with a
demonstrated ability to integrate and
implement these principles at both
strategic and operational levels.
