**About the role**
Ventia’s Defence Base Services (DBS) team are seeking an **Environmental Officer **to join their environmental team based at Leeuwin Barracks in East Fremantle. Whilst this role is based locally, in accordance with the business needs you must be willing and able to travel for field work on a regular basis.
Primarily, this role will see you as an integral member of the team that deliver environmental programmes and provide expert advice and assistance on environmental matters relating to Defence Estate. In addition, you will contribute to the improvement of environmental programmes and how they are delivered, managed, and monitored to support continual improvement and evolve our land management outcomes for Defence and ensure compliance with environmental legislation across services.
**About you**
Reporting directly into the (DBS) Regional Environmental Manager, you are confident when dealing with a variety of people at different levels both internally and externally and have good written and verbal communication skills, as relationships with subcontractors, key Defence personnel, Ventia and external stakeholders comprise a large component of this role.
You are a self-driven and are a safety conscious individual who is accomplished at performing work autonomously, responding to concerns, demonstrating by example, keeping open and clear communication lines, and being regularly involved in the day-to-day needs and operations of the business.
**Key duties, but not limited to**:
- Providing technical oversight of Natural Resources Management (NRM) program of works on the Defence estate
- Working with subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of key NRM programs, including, but not limited to: bushfire mitigation; weed management; arboriculture; feral animal and overabundant native species management; groundwater and surface water quality monitoring; and flora and fauna studies
- Developing and updating management plans and reporting systems
- Analysing and reporting performance of NRM programs to internal and external stakeholders and regulatory bodies as required
- Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with Defence, subcontractors and other stakeholders
- Participating in assurance and compliance activities and implementing improvement actions
- Advising and providing technical support to Facilities Maintenance and project managers on matters of environment and sustainability
- Responding to unplanned environmental issues through short-term works, variations to existing programs and incident response
- Providing assistance to grounds’ maintenance activities or other general tasks as required
- Assisting the Regional Environmental Manager with estimating, scoping, scheduling and reporting activities, ad hoc works and development of other documentation relating to delivery of NRM works
**Skills & experience required**:
- Tertiary qualifications in environmental science or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of weed ecology and identification of common weed species in Western Australia
- Experience with GIS and spatial data management systems such as the ESRI suite of desktop mapping and field data collection tools, and QGIS
- Understanding or knowledge of relevant Commonwealth and Western Australian legislation, policy and practice relevant to natural resource management
- The ability to work autonomously or with mínimal supervision, lead projects and teams as appropriate
- Be willing and able to travel for field work, as required
- Demonstrated ability to prepare environmental plans and reports that are high quality, clear and concise, suitable for non-technical readers or for briefing to executives in Defence and Ventia
- Able to work adaptively in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders
- Experience in land management (fire, weeds, feral animal management) is desirable
- Experience in project management is desirable
**Other special conditions**
The incumbent to this position must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Defence Security Clearance up to a level of negative vetting 1 (secret). As a result of this requirement the incumbent must be an Australian Citizen.
This position requires a National Criminal History check and a valid Australian driver’s licence.
