In the southwest region of Western Australia, Alcoa operates the Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines and the Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup alumina refineries and associated farmlands. These operations are situated within the Gnaala Karla Booja region, upon the traditional lands of the Bindjareb, Wilman and Ganeang.

As our Cultural Heritage Specialist, you will support a range of cultural heritage management activities in connection with bauxite mining, refining and exploration. In this role, your key contributions will be:
- Identification and management of key cultural heritage risks, as they relate to Alcoa’s mine plans and development projects.- Implementing the Cultural Heritage Management and Indigenous and Land Connected Peoples Standards in collaboration with the Regional Cultural Heritage Lead and the Regional Aboriginal Engagement Lead.- Provision of specialist Heritage advice and support to Western Australian locations, including advice on cultural heritage risks, required statutory heritage approvals and appropriate cultural heritage management measures.- Supporting in providing inputs into applicable environmental approvals processes and on-ground support as required at operations on matters surrounding risk management, impact assessment, site protection, management, awareness, and recognition.- Supporting the WA Mining Community Relation Advisors, Aboriginal Engagement Lead and Cultural Heritage Lead to develop & maintain positive relationships in host communities.- Supporting with the design, management and delivery of cultural heritage training.- Ensuring maintenance of records and spatial data within the Cultural Heritage Information System.

About you

To play a part in our ongoing success we are seeking someone with:
- Tertiary qualifications in either archaeology, anthropology or similar would be advantageous.- Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal people in a sensitive, respectful, and culturally appropriate manner.- Relevant experience in cultural heritage management working with land-connected Aboriginal groups in the context of the mining industry preferred.- Conceptual understanding of relevant legislation, including: the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021, Native Title Act 1993, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984.- Ability to collaborate with operational and functional leads to develop & implement relevant cultural heritage management programs and controls.- Sound working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The ability to create, maintain, interrogate, and update layers in GIS is required.- A current Australian Driver’s Licence to support with field work as required.
