Who We Are

Research in the Biology of Ageing Laboratory, led by Dr Andy Philp, is focused on identifying the molecular processes that are altered in the musculoskeletal system during ageing and dystrophy, to develop exercise, dietary, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical therapies to improve functional capacity and quality of life across health span.

The Role

We are looking for a Research Officer to join the Biology of Ageing laboratory under the supervision of Dr Andy Philp. The position is full time, fixed term for a period of 36 months.

The Research Officer will lead a program of work studying the efficacy of mitochondrial targeted therapeutics for the treatment and prevention of Sarcopenia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). To achieve this, the post holder will study the biological role of pharmacological and nutraceutical modulators of mitochondrial biogenesis, dynamics and mitophagy in murine models of ageing and DMD, in addition to translational studies in primary human myoblasts. The Research Officer will participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, supervise honours and post-graduate students and provide support for collaborative projects involving other scientists within and external to the institute.

Essential skills
- PhD in an area of science relating to skeletal muscle biology.
- A proven track record working with murine models of Sarcopenia or Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
- Specific experience in studying mitochondrial biology utilising cell or rodent models.
- Experience using confocal and transmission electron microscopy (or an alternative advanced imaging approach).
- Experience with conducting basic laboratory analyses such as Western blotting, RT-PCR and protein and hormone analyses by ELISA.
- Be highly motivated and capable of independent work.
- Have a strong team focus.
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of people and within established collaborative teams.
- Have knowledge of a research/laboratory environment and relevant requirements.
- Be computer literate in standard/specific research software (R package).
- Be able to maintain thorough laboratory records.
- Good numeracy and literacy skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines and exceed agreed goals.
- Ability to assist in the supervision of students.
- Ability to comply with standard work instructions and procedures.
